A shadow agate bottle carved using the dark inclusions to depict a bee with a monkey on a horse for the rebus, "Ma Shang Feng Hou" (马上封侯) - May you be promoted to the rank of the Marquis immediately. The eye of the horse picked out using the black skin inclusion. The reverse carved with a bird diving down towards another bird standing on a rockwork using the dark inclusions. Height: 60 mm.

Enjoy!

Richard

P.S. George, can you move this thread to the Bottle Talk-> Themes, Scenes, Scrolls, and Paintings instead as there will be some bottles that are made of other materials instead of just stone. Thanks!

This is my horse theme bottle.  It was the last bottle that I purchased from Robert Kleiner, which makes it especially special to me.  I have downloaded these photos from his website.  Hope the resolution is good enough so you can see this one. Enjoy.   Jo

Let me add this is NOT a gem, stone, rock or fossil bottle, but a blue glass with white overlay.  Just shared  it here since it is a horse theme bottle!  It most likely was created between 1800 to 1850. PS   George if you want to move this post somewhere else that is fine.

Hi Jo

Nice bottle. Love the colour combination!

George/Steven, can you move this thread to the Bottle Talk-> Themes, Scenes, Scrolls, and Paintings instead as there are bottles that are made of other materials. Thanks!

And by the way.. you just have to love the shiny black agate collar on Jo's stopper.  Our Charll hit the jackpot when he stumbled upon that treasure trove of collars a few months ago....

Hi Richard and Jo,

I can't keep up with all the wonderful bottles being posted on this thread. Love the sense of humour on Richard's last post. And Jo's glass overlay colour combination is stunning.

Pat, how on earth can you tell from the photo that the black collar is made of agate and not vinyl?

A porcelain bottle painted with a horse resting under a tree. The other side with an inscription that relates the retirement of a war horse with three red seals. The sides decorated with floral ribbon designs and the base with a four character Qianlong Nian Zhi mark in iron red.

Enjoy!

WOW Richard- another beautiful horse theme bottle.  Pat-Yes, you are correct it is an agate collar.  Charll did hit the treasure trove with the beautiful agate collars a few month ago.

Hi Richard,

Nice bottle....but the horse looks too cute to be the 'war horse' mentioned on the reverse.

Just my observation.  Cheesy

Hi Tom

Thanks for your feedback.

It is a retired war horse so I presumed it lacks a bit of exercise!  Grin

Regards.

Tom,

The Chinese believes that the ' old horse ' ( 老马  ) still recognises the way / track
( 识途 ).
Though retired, it can still contribute with his long-acquired wisdom of the way of the war !  Cheesy Grin

Any similar speech in the Thai culture ?

Hi all,

I was looking through the collection of the V & A Museum Catalog and found two lovely examples, a standard to benchmark against and to increase our standard of discerning exquiste art work.

For sharing.

This is the second one for sharing ( also from the V&A Museum collection ).

Read the write-up on the fat and hungry horses in the ancient Chinese minds !!

Thanks for these posts Inn Bok,

We could sure use the fat horse / thin horse allegory in Thailand right now. Very appropriate!

A fossil stone bottle of dark background with scattered coral like inclusions. One side carved in light relief with a running horse and the other side left plain. The horse doesn't look Chinese to me, more like a.... Trojan horse!  Cheesy

Enjoy!
