Hello everyone!! New here and hoping that I may be able to be steered in the right direction in reference to finding out about maker's marks on cinnabar. I acquired a snuff bottle from an estate sale and have not had much luck on it's origin yet other than it being Chinese. Any info, input or help would be greatly appreciated Smiley -Opiate

Hopefully the mark can be seen well enough.

Hello and welcome aboard Opiate !

We are going to need a few things..

1.. A much more blown up pic of the bottle.. Front, back, and from the top as well...

Would like to help you learn if this is cinnabar, or mold resin..

If you can post a few pics, then we can start there...

Happy to help !

Hi Opiate (real name?),

Welcome to the forum. As George says, a few more shots of your bottle will help us in making any comments.

Just one word of advice - can you keep the file size of your photos to around 600 pixels wide. If you notice, when you try and open the image you posted, it blows up so large that it's hard to see.

Thanks!

Hi Opiate,

I reattached your post with the right side image, so that  everybody can see it, the original image you posted is way too big, I bet most of people will have bad time to open it.

It looks like a cinnabar bottle to me, but I still can't see the first image with the base well since I can't open it due to the big size, from the image I can see from the side, it could be a early 20th  Cinnabar bottle.

Thanks for sharing!

Tom mentioned in one of our other cinnabar topics about the use of these triangles depicting water. Maybe this is also a 19th century Japanese lacquer..

Although I would sure like to look for casting marks on the sides... I don't mean to rain on the parade, but there is something overall poor quality about this one..

Pretty sure I see what would be air bubble/pockets on places like the ends of some of the leaves. A closer pic of the floral/leaves would be good..

Just my two cents !  Smiley

Well I re-sized them to 600 pixels but now because they are somehow more than so many KB, file too large and will not let me post. Sad

George,

Can you get into the very first image (showing the base) to downsize it? It is so large, my attempts to open it have failed!

Hi Opiate,

When you post a downsized version of your shot of the base (your first post), please go back into that first post and delete the 4.9MB image. You can access and edit your own posts anytime by clicking on the "modify" icon at top right corner of each post.

Thanks,

Hi Opiate,

I don't think we ever gave you a proper response to the bottle you posted. We ended up talking about image file size instead.  Cheesy

The bottle itself looks like a mid-20th century example, and is possibly made of resin rather than genuine cinnabar lacquer. The metal base on these usually has a spurious Qianlong reign mark stamped on it. The photo is a little fuzzy, but appears to fit this type.

Don't feel bad about it. I think it's true to say that most of us here (including myself) bought a similar bottle in our early collecting days, believing it to be a genuine old one.
