Dear Rube,

I'm not sure about this one. It seems late 19th C. at the latest. But I'm notoriously bad in judging over the net. But I think that, while a bit schematic, it does look good.
Let's see what Steven or Charll say.
Best,
Joey

Adrian, George and Joey,

I'm embarrassed that I mistook a bat for a tiger and a phoenix for a peacock but I must admit I wouldn't be all that bummed if this bottle turned out to be older than I thought...
It'll be interesting to hear what others think.

Thanks,

Rube.

Dear Rube,

There's an advert here (Ireland/UK), with a museum guard going around flicking off old style light switches, and he accidentally 'flicks off' part of a nude male statue!  The voice-over says,
"Should have gone to Spec-savers (a cheap optician)!"   Roll Eyes   Shocked Grin

Agreed Luke!

Hi Rube

I actually am in agreement with Joey that this older (late 189x, early 19xx).  I seem to recall a similar one in the Ko Collection, but not 100 pct sure.  For your info, I have a dozen or so similar shaped inside painted Shandong bottles from 1895-1910.

Joey,

I don't think there's anything wrong with my eyes, it's their lack of comprehension that is clear for all others to see!

Glad you like the bottle Luke, and Pat, thanks for weighing in.  I've been to Bill's site and thought most of the older shandong bottles were dated by color and/ or enamel reds and blacks, so I didn't give it much thought, but I am glad to be able to at least identify the shape.

One question I still have is about the process for making this bottle:  Is it blown and is the overlay applied?

Cheers,

Rube.

Yes... Blown and then dipped in yellow and then carved

George,

Got it!  I see the borderline underlay glass underneath the overlay so I'm assuming that's showing it's been carved in.

Thanks,

Rube.

Dear Rube,

The vast majority of overlay bottles are made this way - blown in one colour, and dipped into another colour or colours.
Re. multiple colour overlays, there are a small number of multiple layer overlays, but multiple colour single overlays are more common. In this type, the base colour bottle has areas of different colours applied, and then carved.

There is a very small subgroup of bottles with appliqued glass pieces that are NOT carved after the second colour is applied.
But these are invariably very simple round flower heads and leaves shaped and carved separately, then reheated and applied to the bottle and usually made to look like flowers with the addition of applied glass 'strings'.  The designs are VERY simple, and you can see that the carving doesn't go into the base material.

    Best,
Joey

Greetings,

I'm posting one more overlay bottle because I'm seeking redemption in trying to classify old vs. modern.  I'm calling this a modern example, based on level of carving detail, polish and profile, and flat detail on the foot vs, convex.  Also, I think it's even depicting another phoenix!

Comments welcome,

Rube.

Rube,

I would look at your recent red overlay posted bottle as being 'contemporary' rather than 'modern'.  Modern to me suggests within the last few years, and in the case of snuff bottle collecting most certainly post 2000.  In this case, this bottle looks to be one that would have been available in the 1960s to 1970s.  There were quite a lot of nicely done bottles available on the market at this time as base from what I've seen in old dealer sale catalogs from that period.

It may be just a matter of semantics on my part but I tend to refer to bottles that were produced in the last half of the 20th century as contemporary (i.e., old but not quite antique).

Not saying I'm right (the whole photo/internet assessment issue), but I would evaluate your bottle as being a nice collector piece from that period.

This is a bottle I have had for a while and was one where whether it was old or new was of no importance, I was just drawn to it for its colour, subject and quality.

I'm not sure of it's age, there is some wear to the footrim and some small bubbles evident in the base glass but, while it looks like a camphor base, it is the interior of the glass that makes it look opaque as opposed to anything in the base glass which you can see is clear on the picture showing the neck opening.

The carving doesn't have the excess of detail common in so many newer bottles, it's restrained and very well executed and both overlay and base layer are well polished. Height is 63mm.

Regards, Adrian.

PS, what looks like a chip out of the overlay on the fish's head is not there, some glitch seems to have happened when the picture was transferred from my camera.

I recently bought a very modern glass overlay bottle, honestly dated to the 21st century. Several similar double overlay bottles appreared on tne internet. Now my question: does somebody know where these bottles are produced and which is the technique used (copying machines)? Thanks for your insights.
Georges
