Dear Inn Bok,

Thanks for sharing such a feast of new overlay bottles. Like Joey, I like the second one of the first group.

But my favourites are the last two (in the last group). I love the rural subject matter, and the carving appears exceptionally well done for modern bottles.

Dear Inn Bok,

Lovely group of new bottles.

The second one in the first group is something new to me. What is the treatment of the inside of it ? It looks like clear glass that has been prepared for inside painting.

Regards, Adrian.

Thanks for posting these Inn Bok and Adrian.   I think eventually we will start seeing the artists signing these under their own name.  At least I hope so.... I think some of these are just beautiful, ...

I particularly like Inn Bok's second and Adrian's...

Tom,

When you said " the second one in the first group ", do you mean photo #154 & 155 ?
If it is, I should add #156 to show another view ( all these belong to the same bottle ).

Personally, though, I do find  the carvings a bit crowded for the circumferential area ( for a 69mm high bottle ).
Perhaps the artist was just trying to squeeze in the symbols of Fu, Lu and Shou to bless the keeper of his work.
In that case, I will have no complaints !

Tom,

I am sorry. I think I make a mistake. You probably mean the round-flattened bottle with a squirrel ready to jump off the branch.

Adrian,

I suppose you mean the same bottle.
This bottle does have a similar internal surface condition like the one prepared for inside painting, finely roughened, but used for overlay of two colors ( blue on red ).

The other face of the bottle is attached.

Pat,

You mentioned about artists signing their own work  -  I agree.

In fact, one of the pieces I posted #144, I now show additional carvings as I turn the same bottle. This piece was acquired from Master Wang Guan Yu ( 王冠宇 ) in Nov. 1994 when he came to Singapore to promote Hebei works. He told me the overlay bottle was done by his wife and she did sign at the base with the symbol of a leaf ! see attached as well. Wang mentioned that for good overlay bottles, his wife produced only about 6 pieces a month.

Hi Inn Bok,

I'm assuming they may have done that to make the design on the bottle stand out more. I have a modern enamel over clear glass bottle that has been painted inside which gives a 3D effect which I hadn't seen anywhere else.

I've been reading that the artists working in the Imperial households signed their works and many are known, it's a shame bottle artists weren't the same but lack of space on the bottles might have been a factor ?

Regards, Adrian.

I wonder if the leaf could represent Wang Guan Yu's shop as a whole, and not necessarily carved by his wife. The leaf looks to have been part of the mold for the base bottle.

Pretty bottle !

I don't understand why she didn't incise her name on the base, and fill in with gold or black or red.

Here is a modern one that I actually like a little.. Very ornately carved, and finished nicely.. No abrasive marks left over.. The ground is a little rough, but ok.. Overall I am happy with it for being a 20th bottle..

Pin translated for me as follows..

Nice bottle George. As you say, well made for a modern bottle in its own right, not tryng to copy an older one.

George,

Beautiful bottle, especially when lit from the inside !
How is the interface between the carved objects and the surface of the ground ?

George

I missed this one!  Very nice.  I really hope it is made of good quality glass.  Tom and I have not been so lucky with these modern overlays.  I have about a dozen by now that have gone to waste.  The funny thing is that they usually develop an ammonia-like odor when they deteriorate.

Here is another modern overlay for today..  A little rough, but for 2.25 plus mailing, can't beat it... I like very much the contrast between dark overlays on white ground..

If someone can make out the seal, that would be great !

Pat,

Ammonia...?
Next time we get together, I'll get my disintegrating glass bottles out, and we can compare odors.   Grin  Roll Eyes

Hi Everyone,

I'm attaching a few photos of a bottle I have that I think is a modern overlay bottle, so I'm including it in this informative thread started by Tom.  All I know for certain is that it was purchased in Singapore in 1973.

I think it's blown amber glass with yellow applied overlay, vs. carved. Measuring 5.1 cm, it's flattened round shape reminds me of Shandong bottles from the 50's.  The overlay appears to be a peacock but I'm not sure of the foliage it's eating?  And I haven't seen the handle details of the tiger before, what is it holding?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Rube.

Hi Rube,

Nice one. To my (inexperienced eye) it looks to have some age.

The handles look to be bats and they may be holding a shou symbol although I can't see the detail well enough and it's not a detail of a handle I recognise so may be a good clue to age. It looks well worked, the foot rim is very nice.

Regards, Adrian.
