I recently acquired one of these out of pure curiosity to see one up close.  The inside bottle is lodged firmly (bottom fused) in the clear glass, but with extra space in between the 2 glass surfaces.  Makes me wonder how exactly they do this.

Exactly George!  Another tourist souvenir gimmick.

I don't know why they bother painting the INSIDE of the inner bottle, since even painting on the outside of it would still qualify as "inside painted"!

I just saw this. I assume that they make one bottle, then make another around it. Notice the mouths of both bottles line up. They run a tube through the outer one to the inner one, and pump in material to abrade the surface for painting. Then they use a slightly longer brush...
Why bother?

Hi George

The Robert Hall's example is a normal double bottle although the positioning of the second bottle is quite unique. The second bottle is still outside the first bottle, but smaller in size. As per the enclosed description, such bottle(s) allows the user to house two different flavours of snuff. Therefore, it is quite different from the ebay bottle with is enclosed within another bottle.

Just my observation.

Regards.

This is an altogether different animal. Firstly, it is carved from quartz crystal as the caption says, and secondly the smaller bottle is clinging to the outside of the larger one. But viewed from this angle it may have provided the original inspiration for the glass bottle-within-a-bottle.

Having said that, there is a tradition in Chinese popular art of carved openwork spheres within spheres, designed primarily to show off the dexterity of the craftsman, and this is more likely to have been the source of inspiration.

PS: Whoops - it looks like Richard and I both replied at the same time!
