Dear YT,

You are right. But that was a 'Justicial' auction, run on behalf of the French State, and the commission plus tax was just over 1/2 of that of a regular private auction.
Best,
Joey

Dear Tom,

Yours is a nice example of a crystal. Does this group all come in a certain size and height?

I have an amethyst very well hollowed and has inclusions on it's base and on one of the side. Is it also from this group?  7cm height

Cheers,
YT

Just saw Joey's response. The recent Paris auction had a very reasonable commission.  Wink

Dear YT,

The amethyst bottle you just posted is very attractive, and definitely part of this group! Look at the way the bare trees and the pine branches are carved. They may even be by the same hand.

There is no set height for this group. But I have never seen one to be under 6cm tall. Most are between 6.4cm and 7.2cm.

All best,
Tom

Adding a recent purchase to this thread.

A rock crystal "fingerling" bottle. Height is 75mm and it is of slightly flattened form with a flat oval footrim. The spoon is possibly bone and the stopper is coral with a jade ? finial and glass ? collar. It is very well hollowed.

Regards, Adrian.

Thank you all for your comments. It was one of those happy "Buy it now" moments on ebay when it had just been listed and already had a number of people watching it.

Dear Rube,

I assume you are referring to 'Shibui'. The late great collector, Patricia Miller of Honolulu, Patty to her friends [and we were legion!  Grin], taught me to use this Japanese term to describe simple, elegant, but very sophisticated wares.
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,

Hi Everyone,

I read through this entire thread about a week ago, and was blown away by all the bottles.  Tom, thanks for starting this  as your examples are wonderful!  And Adrian, as so often is the case, I seem to be following your lead, and will share another.

I'm calling this a dark crystal bottle of flattened globular form (is this correct terminology?)  sitting on an recessed oval foot rim.  The mouth is slightly concave and the bottle appears well hollowed, and the gilt metal stopper with red glass resembles a chrysanthemum, which may be original to the bottle. I especially like how the carver utilized the natural inclusions of the crystal to shape the bamboo and chrysanthemum.  Bottle w/o stopper measures 5.6 cm.  As always, any help with dating this bottle is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Rube.

Hi Rube (or 4G collector!!),

If you return to the bottle in this link you will see very similar use of the natural wispy opaque inclusions:

http://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/index.php/topic,1842.0/msg,41986.html

While your bottle was perhaps not produced by the same workshop or "school", it is in my opinion of similar period. The interior hollowing appears to closely follow the exterior profile, the carving is delicately executed, the mouth/lip is acceptable, and attention has been paid to detailing of the foot rim (often not so on later examples).

The stopper is interesting, and sets the bottle off well. As to its being original, that's anyone's guess.

Thanks for sharing (and thanks for the compliment!).

Tom

PS: Your description is good, but to be more concise I would re-phrase the description of the foot as "....sitting on an oval foot rim surrounding a recessed (flat/convex?) base".

Dear Rube (4-G sound like a cell.phone!  Shocked),

I agree with Tom as to dating, and also whether the stopper is 'original'. That is a loaded term. It was not made in the same workshop as the bottle, but stoppers were not usually made in the same workshop as the bottles.

One would buy or commission a bottle, then take it to the shops selling stoppers, buy a spoon from another place, and then have the stopper seller get the stopper, spoon and cork (or thinly-cut wrapped cork, or possibly thinly-cut wrapped leather) put together. And this was all after the buyer had commissioned a special padded box for his new treasure.
Best,
Joey

Hi Rube,

Nice bottle and good to have all these similar bottles grouped together.

I may go with a micro incised ivory bottle next so you are pre warned if you want to follow that one  Wink

I think forth generation collector trumps everyone here so should be a proud sign off to any post you make.

Regards, Adrian.

Dear Adrian,

I have 2 'snowflake' questions for you.
1. What if someone has decided that he's the re-incarnation of the Qianlong Emperor, and therefore the source of many of our best bottles?
2. What if some woman who knows basically nothing about snuff bottles, feels she can 'channel' the Dowager Empress Cixi?

Would they trump 'Fourth Generation Collector'?   Shocked Roll Eyes Grin
Best,
