Welcome to the forum Henric,

That is a very elegant bottle. And set off with a beautiful stopper.
Can you tell us a little more about the bottle?
How tall is it (measured without its stopper)?

Regards,
Tom

Certainly. The bottle is 2.5 inches tall and probably dates to the mid 19th century.  I purchased it from a North-West Coast collection.  Here another picture of the bottle standing up.

Hi Henric,

Thanks for the extra information. It appears to be very nicely finished inside and out. It is difficult to assess from photos, but I would say your dating is about right. It could even be a little earlier. A picture of the foot, and also the mouth opening (without stopper) would be helpful in making a better judgement.

About time we had another post here.  Wink
This is my most recent acquisition.......

Description:
Hair crystal snuff bottle of flattened, rounded rectangular shape, with a cylindrical neck, concave lip, and a recessed flat foot surrounded by a broad, rounded footrim; well hollowed to form evenly thick walls;  the clear colourless material sparsely suffused with a few fine black tourmaline needles.  Green jade ‘split bead’ stopper with a gilt bronze collar. Spoon missing.
    Height: 8.0 cm w/o stopper
    Tentative dating: 1820-1900

Commentary:
Ignoring its very generous size, the present bottle conforms stylistically and proportionally in all respects to the large group of flattened rounded flask form bottles, which were a staple favourite in China from at least the early Daoguang period till the end of the century, and was adopted as the 'standard shape' by inside painting artists.
The relatively thick walls as seen on this example are more often encountered on bottles made of smoky quartz, amethyst and citrine, all members of the same quartz silica family, where the extra thickness helps to show off the natural colour of the stone. It is less commonly found on colourless rock crystal and hair crystal bottles.
The black tourmaline 'hairs' here are so few and so fine, that they can easily be missed if only viewing the side which has none.

PS: These images are from the auction house. I will post my own photos, with some alternative stoppers, later.

Dear Tom,
    WONDERFUL BOTTLE!!! Congratulations.
But your dating for this superb bottle confuses me.  Because of it's flawless shape, beautiful raised footrim, and all-round feeling of 'shibui', I would date this bottle to ca.1780-1860.
What has convinced you to move the 'goalposts' 40 years later?   Huh
Best for Passover,

Indeed a stunning bottle Tom !

Not sure if it was you that noticed, or if the split bead was included within the description, but heck of an observation.

Curious as well to why this would not be 18th ..  The only thing I can think of is the 8cm height..

Big congratulations Tom.. Really a beautiful bottle ..

Dear Joey and George,

Thanks for your comments! I agree that the bottle could be older. But I would not date it earlier than 1800 for two reasons:

(1) the shape: this flattened rectangular shape didn't really become popular until the Daoguang period. Sure, earlier examples exist, but they tend to be slimmer and a little less rectilinear, with the transition from shoulder to neck flowing more smoothly and delicately. This bottle is carved with such bold confidence that the shape must have already been well established as a 'style' when it was created. Every aspect of it is superbly crafted, but it's a very robust bottle. There is nothing delicate about it.
(2) the size: large bottles didn't come into vogue until the mid-1800s.

George, the sales description didn't say anything about the stopper. It looked like a regular cabochon set in a nasty beige plastic collar. It was only after receiving it that I noticed it was a split bead, with an old patinated collar made of gilt bronze. An added bonus!

Another small point (Joey, I think you spotted it already), and it shows the attention to detail - this bottle has one of the finest footrims of any bottle in my collection.
