Tom,

I remember seeing this bottle last weekend thinking it was similar to mine. Thank you for possible dating and for
correcting my cataloging, too, as that sounds more appropriate.

Joey,
For whatever reason, I get somewhat obsessed about stoppers even though I know they're probably rarely original.
This one, however has always struck me as interesting because of its subject and how it relates to the carving on the bottle.
But I do have a few other bottles with flower stoppers, so, I guess it's not all that unique.

Adrian,
I agree about it's nice to have all these bottles together, at least I didn't make a mess of this thread! Regarding your next post, I don't think I have one those, but I can't wait to see yours.

Cheers,
Rube.

Dear Rube,

Please don't misunderstand me. The stopper may well have been matched to the bottle by the first owner of the bottle.
We just don't have any way to document or prove it, unless the bottle was described in the Imperial Palace Workshops paperwork, where they did describe snuff bottles in great detail, and also the stoppers that were matched to them.

But it is often hard to find the bottles, much less match them up to written descriptions.
Best,
Joey

Hello again,

This thread, started by Tom, is one of my favorites on the Forum.  I'd like to add one more and hopefully get comments about it's possible dating.  It measures 2 15/16" w/o the rose quartz stopper, has a slightly concave lip and rests on an oval recessed foot rim. And, as far as I could tell, moderately well hollowed, but not extreme like others I've seen. My grandfather gave it to my grandmother in 1951.  And though I know it has no bearing on the bottle, I really like the spoon on this one!

Cheers,

Rube.

Dear Rube,

That is a seriously good Tourmalinated Quartz, also called a Hair Crystal.
The 'hairs' are tourmaline crystals that were in the metamorphic material that 'became' quartz under pressure.

It looks 19th C., and I also LOVE that spoon. A beauty! And the footrim is very well done as well.

Incidentally, there is also Rutilated Quartz. The rutiles are gold or silver coloured.
Best,
Joey

Joey and Pin,

Thanks for your comments!  I'm pretty fond of "Tourmalinated Quartz" bottles too, especially this one.

Cheers,

Rube.

This thread, started by Tom, is one of my favorites on the Forum.

Thanks Rube,
I see you have good taste...!   Grin

Your hair crystal bottle is very attractive. And I also love that spoon!

The overall shape of the bottle and its detailing lead me to date it to around 1820-1880.

Best,
Tom

Steven and Tom,
Thanks for your comments about this bottle.
Tom, I'm glad you like it, as I was hesitant to post it on your thread as it's far from crystal clear. I photographed a rutile one, not as nice IMO, but I'll share it too for comparison.
Cheers,
Rube

Hi Rube,

No need to hesitate. If the quartz isn't opaque or milky then it's clear, as far as I'm concerned.

In contrast to your 'busy' hair crystal, here is one I posted on another thread which is the extreme opposite. It contains no more than a couple dozen really fine 'hairs'....almost imperceptible in the photographs.

http://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/index.php/topic,2620.msg34984.html#msg34984

Look forward to seeing your rutilated one.

Tom,

Here is the rutilated quartz bottle, measuring 49mm w/o coral stopper.  I think it is carved in the shape of a fruit?

Cheers,

Rube.

Dear Rube,

It looks nice, but I can't tell if it is a fruit or a gourd, though it looks like there are vines and either smaller gourds/fruit on it, or bugs.
Is it well hollowed?

Let me give you a ranking:
#1. Superbly well hollowed [ leaving 1-2 mm thick wall all over, visible in clear quartz or even in white jade with back-lighting]
#2. Very well hollowed [3-3.5mm thick wall]
#3. Well hollowed [like your purse bottle]
#4. Acceptably hollowed [thick walls, but the bottle will hold enough snuff to use and share with 4 or 5 friends]
#5. Core drilled [enough to hold the spoon]

Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Joey,
Thanks for categories!
After describing them to my brother, he says "well hollowed".

Dear all,

Apparently, Tom's thread has become a platform for members to showcase bottles matching the theme from their collections. So I've decided to share mine here instead of opening a new thread! Wink

This smoky quartz bottle came as a birthday present for myself. It's my second smoky quartz bottle. One with a good provenance: Sotheby's New York, Collection of Bob C. Stevens, 25 June 1982.

Height: 67mm

Seems like the bottle has been kept in its original condition all these years as the 35 years old auction label is still on the bottle.

Special thanks to Charll for providing me catalog image and description of the bottle from the 1982 auction. I simply adore its undecorared form!

Hope you all like it!

Best,
Samson

Dear Samson,

Congratulations! I was at that auction, and bought a few Stevens bottles (although I'm not sure at this stage which ones!  Grin).
I bought Stevens bottles at the first Stevens Sale, in Honolulu, Nov. 1981, at the time of the ICSBS first Honolulu convention; in #2, in NYC in Mar.1982; in this one, #3 in NYC in June 1982; and in #4, in NYC in Oct.1982, at the time of the ICSBS 2nd NYC convention.

Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey
