Hello everyone, hope you are all well.

Here's a glass IP bottle by the artist Pi Jung-Chiu with landscape and flowers design, purchased by my late father from YF Yang in 1968. I'm told it was made between 1890 and 1920, and would love to know what the inscription says.....

Vaughan, great looking bottle and to my taste in middle period bottles.   Here is another by the same artist as previously posted by George.

Detail of the meeting in the Bamboo Lodge.  Bottle painted by Pi Jung-chiu.

Vaughn,
It is a great bottle. However in Pinyin romanization, it is Bi Rongjiu.
Pi Jung Chiu is Wade-Giles....
Best,
Joey

Hi Vaughan

It is signed Bi Rongjiu and dated summer, 1907.

For your reference.

Regards.

Thanks Charll, George, for your comments and Richard for the translation, much appreciated. I stand corrected regarding the name, Pi Jung-Chiu is what was typed on the original YF Yang invoice (rice paper!) in 1968.

Hi Vaughan

You are not wrong, just that the Wade-Giles method is an older version of interpreting the Chinese character pronounication. The newer system is the Pinyin method.

For your reference.

Regards.

Thanks Richard. I'm afraid my knowledge of snuff bottles is a bit basic, which is why my comments about other member's bottles has been necessarily limited!

I've been asked if the white spots in the photos I posted were mould, apparently not an unknown fault. They were in fact reflections and I've posted better photos taken in different light settings. There is no mould inside this bottle that I can see, and it seems pristine. Any white 'spots' are in fact white paint put there by the artist himself to highlight details such as flowers. Any red marks are from the rangefinder in my camera. The colours on the actual bottle are stronger than in the photos (which are low resolution to keep their size down). I'm concentrating on collecting hardstone bottles so I'll be putting this bottle up for sale on ebay shortly.

Thanks Vaughan!

I did spot some white spots on your first post as well, thought it could be mould, can you take a look the inside painting from the mouth, if there is some white spots inside, then it could be mould, since I have a couple of bottles with mould , and its not easy to get rid of.

Its a beautiful bottle, I sure will keep my eyes on ebay, when you list it, please let us know when you put it on.

Best!

Hi Steven,

No, no mould at all, just the usual dark marks from where the stopper has been, certainly no white marks and no mould. Thanks,

Vaughan

Dear Vaughn,
I was the one who thought it had mold from the photos. I didn't remember it having mold when I saw it 'live' in Aug., but thought from the photos posted that it now did.
I stand corrected. A beautiful bottle. And from YF Yang, a wonderful provenance.
Good luck Steven; I hope you succeed in getting it.
Best,
Joey

I've put the bottle up for sale on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=161144201752

I almost decided to keep it! This is a reluctant sale... I hope it goes to a good home.

Hi Vaughan

This is a very nice bottle.  For what it is worth, in general, ebay crowds usually do not like reserves, and it turns people off to bid it up to the reserve amount.  If you really want to protect your investment or asset, you would be better of exposing your minimum threshold as a starting bid.  Just some friendly advice...

Thanks Vaughan for letting us know!

I am sure I am not the only one interested in it on the forum.Smiley could be a battle for us.Smiley

I totally agree with Pat, speak of myself, I don't like the reverses, and never bid one with reverse, since I have no clue how high the reverse or the target will be, even its a fairly high start bidding point, at least I know if it can fit my budget or not.
