This pair of dishes are on the way !

I have not ever seen Qianlong Nian Zhi mark in regular script like this before.. If like most other enamel and copper pieces, perhaps safe to say mid 20th century ?

Also, not sure about who the charactors on the plates might be...

1 5/8"

George,
The mark is VERY crude. I would have said 1990s, but I could be wrong.
Who the characters are? Damned if I know.  Cheesy

Dear George,

I agree with Joey, those are modern, only depends the painting style, also the mark.

the old mark maybe not that well written, but for sure the strokes will be very firm and full of strength, since those artist paint the mark and use brush everyday, this mark seems to be painted by someone no any experience on brushes, only pens or pencils...

The first figure is Budai Buddhist.

The second one , I am not sure, could be one of 18 luolans.

Steven,
In the 'bad old days' (when Chinese were called 'chinamen', etc.), this was called  'happy fat Buddha'!

Thanks for your inputs!

That is not mine, I agree with you all, most of the snuff dishes are smaller, but this one does look like a snuff dish. that is why I wanna hear your comments.Smiley

Dear Tom,

Good thinking.. my understanding is that ladies should have a container to put cosmetics in, might not need a dish, most likely a cosmetics box with cover, I have not seen one real antique cosmetics box before, but I assume it will look like the image attached.

Steven,
2 3/8 inches, while large, could definitely be a snuff dish. Is it cloisonné or painted enamel?
It looks quite good, and early, say late 18th to mid-19th C,

Hi Steven,

I thought of that because a set of small enameled dishes I saw for sale in Bangkok were described as 19th century ladies' cosmetic dishes from Vietnam. They were around an inch and a half in diameter, exactly the right size for snuff dishes.

But having a cover like the one in your picture makes much more sense.

It has been posted on the forum before, but I can not find it..

What is the largest size that could still be considered a snuff dish Joey ?

That is interesting.  I had no idea.. I have re-sold and traded dishes that were over 2.5 inches and flat out ignored others that were beautiful,  .. makes me sad now..

Dear Joey,

Its a  cloisonné one, I actually find a group of snuff dish on bonhams. the size varied from 1" -2 1/8", I guess the size 2 3/8 is still acceptable.

http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/20998/lot/8039/

I like the blue and white landscape one a lot, the size is also perfect, according to the price, they are not so expensive.

-Dear Pat,

Don't be sad, you can always find the better ones. Yes, snuff dish is not so easy to  be found, but they are still there once a while.

Dear George,
I would have said 2 1/2 inches diameter round and 3 inches by 2 inches if oval or square.

Pat,
I got rid of the 6 beautiful snuff dishes at the end of my 1987 catalogue. How did I sell that superb blue and white snuff dish, ex.Bob Stevens?!
   We all make mistakes, sometimes.
Best, Joey
