Joey,

Yes, I will be in Singapore from 22 January onwards.

For me and my wife, we do not need much preparation for the Chinese New Year ( CNY ).
In fact, in Singapore, many families choose to travel abroad during the CNY. Our main engagement is family reunion dinner
on the eve of CNY ( i.e. 30 January 2014 ). The other will be on the first day of CNY ( the first day of our lunar new year ) when
younger folks visits the elders to wish them ' Happy New Year ' and have family lunch together ( nowadays done in restaurants
generally ).

As Tom has said, we expect tourist arrivals from China from end January onwards, visiting Singapore and experiencing how the
Chinese community in Singapore celebrate CNY. Singapoe has two casinos which are a draw to our Chinese visitors.

Hi Joey

To answer your question regarding Chinese New Year (CNY) in Singapore, it depends on what you like.

If you wish to soak in the atmosphere right from the start, there is usually a Chinese New Year bazaar in Chinatown before the festival and the climax being Chinese New Year Eve where they will be celebrations to welcome the new year. However, if you do not like crowds, this may not be your cup of tea.

In this case, I suggest you visit around the second day of the CNY onward (1 Feb) whereby you still can enjoy the festive atmosphere. There is a traditional River Hao Bao, a temporary festive market beside the Singapore river during the new year period of 15 days where there will be stalls selling traditional food, arts and craft as well as cultural performances.

In addition, there is also a Chingay Parade usually on weekend whereby there will be performances from various cultural groups (now including many oversea non-Chinese performances as well). It's like the Flower Parade found in many countries.

In the past, many shops were closed during the CNY period but nowadays, many of them will start operating from the 4th day of the CNY.

For your information. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Regards.

A double-gourd bottle made from the gourd itself.
The small one ( 55 mm high ) has six segments, and the big one ( 75 mm ) has five segments.

For sharing.

Inn Bok,

I really like the simplicity of natural gourds formed by tying rather than moulding. Thanks for sharing.

Inn Bok,

I have to take your word that it is a nice bottle to fondle in the hand. I think the flat shape makes it also fit nicely in one's pocket.  Cheesy

Beautiful bottle Richard..

Made of a beautiful turquoise mined from China .. Love the beautiful grain .. I like it better than any of the turquoise mined from here in the States.

Dear Inn Bok and Richard,
Both double gourd bottles were beautiful, but I have to say I preferred the chalcedony over the turquoise, even though its markings are stunning.

Richard,

The texture of the turquoise bottle is beautiful. Is the light brownish patch due to the patina from the prolonged handling ?

Hi Inn Bok

Thanks.

I am not sure, but looks more like the natural markings of the stone.

Regards.

Richard and Inn Bok,
Both very attractive bottles. Personally I prefer the plain turquoise, kept free of carving beyond shaping the double gourd, so as to allow the eye to fully appreciate the natural markings. Malachite also has interesting markings, so I find the additional carving unnecessary. Just my two cents' worth.

George,
How can you tell this is a Chinese turquoise?

Tom, If memory serves me correctly, I recognize this particular spiderweb turquoise as being from Hubei Province..

Hi George

I think Inn Bok is referring to the yellow-brownish patches on the lower half of the turquoise bottle, not the black matrix.

Regards.

George, I'm impressed. So you can tell a geographic location by the matrix pattern as well as the colour.
