Hi All

Sharing another Zhou Hongbin/Honglai bottle with you.

An incised porcelain bottle decorated on one side with two maidens standing  beside a pierced rockwork, a micro-engraved inscription to one side. The reverse with a poem and a signature inscription on the side, all incised in sepia on a white ground. Signed Hongbin, Zhou Honglai, seals Zhou and Zhun.

Provenance: Albert Pyke
                   The Kardos Collection
                   Sothebys New York

However, this bottle is unusual for a few reasons:

- Zhou Hongbin/Honglai usually incised glass bottles, porcelain bottles are few and rare.
- This bottle was signed on both sides but with different names. One side is signed Zhou Honglai whereas the other side is signed Zhou Hongbin.
- The bottle still has the original Kardos Collection sticker on the base.

Enjoy!

Richard

Just feel like sharing one of my favorite inscribed bottles from Christopher Randall's, The Brush The Stone.

Crystal of slender form decorated on each side with a poem in official script.

Just a really beautiful bottle .

Hi all

Here is a brief update on the history of the various Chinese calligraphy styles:

篆书 Zhuanshu (Official script) is the official writing style by court officials. It was also the earliest calligraphy style since the unification of China as a country by Emperor Qin Shihuang (秦始皇) in 259 BC.

However, as time went by, court officials found that this style of writing was slow and so they developed a new style, 隶书 Lishu which literally means Clerical script.

Again, to speed up the writing process, 楷书 Kaishu (Standard script) was developed. The name was derived from the Chinese word, Kaimo (楷模), which means role model, a standard that one should try to achieve. Therefore, it became the standard handwriting style for the Chinese till today.

行书 Xingshu (Running script) is used for faster and unofficial writing so it can be written faster. It is often used in personal letters and notes.

草书 Caoshu (Grass script) is more expressive of the writer with free flow strokes and more for artistic presentation. The characters are sometime simplified and written swiftly with a continuous flow.

There are other Chinese calligraphy styles such as Jia Guwen (甲骨文 Oracle script), the earliest form of Chinese characters written on tortoise bones or shells and Jin script (金文) which are often engraved on ancient bronze vessels.

However, these are used before the Qin era whereby the Chinee writings were not yet united as a single language.

For your reference.

Regards.

Richard

Hi Giovanni

There are several Chinese calligraphy styles. The most common five styles are as follows (in chronological order):

篆书 Zhuanshu
隶书 Lishu
楷书 Kaishu
行书 Xingshu
草书 Caoshu

The word, Shu (书) which literally means book in Chinese, is short for calligraphy Shufa (书法) when used in this context.

Although there are other styles and variations, these remained most popular styles being used.

I attached a page with the examples of these five types of calligraphy styles for your reference. Please note that the Chinese characters illustrated are in the Simplified Form, with the original Traditional Form listed on the last column, if applicable.

For your reference.

Regards.

Richard

Hi Richard,

Many thanks for this useful 'summary' of the different calligraphy styles, and explaining how they came to be.
Like John, I will copy it to my notes.

Best,
Tom

Hi Joey

Xingkaishu is a mixture of Xing Shu and Kai Shu. As different people have different writing styles, some combined them into one. There is also Xingcao Shu as well, a hybrid of Xing Shu and Cao Shu.

Even just a single type of script like Kai Shu, there are many variations. There were four major schools on Kai Shu and each calligrapher had his own followers. They were known as the Four Masters of Kai Shu.

They are:

欧阳询 Ouyang Xun (Tang dynasty)
颜真卿 Yan Zhenqing (Tang dynasty)
柳公权 Liu Gongquan (Tang dynasty)
赵孟頫 Zhao Mengfu (Yuan dynasty)

Attached are the sample writings of these four masters for your comparison.

Specially mentioned was a Kai Shu style known as the Skinny Body Style (瘦金体). This was invented by an emperor, Song Huizong Zhao Ji (宋徽宗赵佶). His characters were all very slim in appearance and hence, the name.

Song Huizong was a talented painter and calligrapher. He was also the first emperor to establish an imperial academy of painting in his palace.

However, he was a poor ruler. During his reign, there were many corrupt officials and therefore, many rebellions in the country as well. He was captured by the Northern barbaric Jin tribe, together with his son. That marked the end of the Northern Song dynasty.

The famous classical Chinese novel, All Men Are Brothers (also known as Water Margin: Outlaws of the Marsh) uses his reign as the backdrop for the story.

For your reference.

Regards.

Richard

Thank you, Richard.

While I knew that Xingkaishu was a combination of Xingshu & Kaishu,
I did not know about Xingcaoshu.
And I didn't know that there were different variations of Kaishu.
I enjoyed looking at the 3 Tang dynasty & 1 Yuan dynasty Masters' calligraphy.
And the 'skinny body' Kaishu of the last Northern Song Emperor, Song Huizong Zhao Ji.

But a pity you couldn't find the same 5 or 10 characters in each style,
so that we could compare them side by side.

Best,
Joey
