Hi Everyone,

I acquired this beautifully carved Chinese glass censer/box this weekend and know it is not related to snuff, but want to share it with the forum anyway. All opinions, good or bad, are welcome. The piece was glued down to a base, so I had no idea it had a Qianlong Yu Zhi four character mark until I pried the base off. I have no idea if it is mark & period or a later copy yet, either way it is very nicely carved. The piece is 9.5 cm high and came from the Collection of Philanthropist Mrs. Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans.

I am also looking for some advice, the previous owners glued the lid on and I would like to remove it, any ideas about how to safely do so would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Keith

Hi Keith,

It looks great, I don't have much experience on glass. But there are good signs over there, it could  be a REAL gem.

The carving is super, so is the polish.the color looks right in my eye. the mark looks really good as well, all point to a Qianlong glass ware, I heard the yellow color will be slight different for different period, so you might find a qianlong period yellow glass ware to do a comparison.

The yellow looks really good in my opinion. would let other fellas chip in and have their comments!

Dear Keith,
that of the hided mark has been a great discovery! I can imagine how you must feel yourself.
As for removing glues, on porcelain I use paint stripper with no problem at all, so I believe that glass should have no problem too.
Whish you have found something great, I am excited.

Keith,
First of all, no apologies necessary about posting it.
It looks like a great piece of mid-Qing glass. I think the mark is correct and that the Imperial Yellow is the correct shade for the Qianlong reign. If so, it is Imperial Palace Workshops, and an important piece.
   Thank you for sharing it.

I put the piece under a UV light (black light), and noticed swirls of color up until about the top of the carving. No idea if its supposed to have swirls or not. You can sort of see them around the mark, in the pictures. The feet have convincing wear, but not overdone. I am still searching everywhere for a similar shape, from period pieces to hot out of the kiln pieces. Thanks for looking and posting your opinions.

I sought the opinions of five renowned experts. One said mark & period, two said possibly mark and period but more probably Republic Period, one said not mark and period but 20th century and the last one has not replied yet.... I feel confused

Dear Confused,

This is a remarkable piece regardless of Mark and Period.  I know age and confirmation is important to many, but this is also a quality piece of art in spite of all that stuff.

From someone that is not an expert, but knows quality when they see it!

Hahahha, That was good Charll and you are correct! I spend much of my time researching, validating periods and dating, when maybe I should just enjoy the piece for what it is...

A few more images of the carving (the color is off due to the lighting) and I finally got the lid off.

Hi keith,

That looks like a perfect match to me. the other thing you need to look at is finding a qianlong yellow glass ware to compare the color..
