Some of the following is from a new book just received, "Masterworks Of Chinese Figure Painting Southern Song Dynasty", and are Su Hanchen paintings who is said to have worked in the painting academy 119 - 1125 display his creativity in paintings about children.

Also a painting and description from the National Palace Museum.

Hopefully these will help a little towards identifying in detail descriptions of children playing bottle paintings ..  Smiley

His "Children Playing In Autumn" and "Children Playing in Winter" present a sister and brother in beautiful clothers plaing in a garden. In the paintings even plants become an animated part of a chorus against the tristful autumn and freezing winter. Southern-Song artists paid unprecendented attention to presentation of children.

"Playing Ball Under Plantain Tree", "Playing Ball Under Plantain Tree with Rocks", and Children Playing in a Courtyard in Autumn depicts buffalo boys among lakes and rivers in South China. In spring breeze and summer drizzle they graze buffaloes, call them, play with them and make them fight each other until frosty autumn and winter slip in.

"Children Playing in a Small Courtyard", Palace Museum, Beijing.

Trees bent by wind herald a mountain rain. An ordinary scene is rendered full of motion and tension by the dancing willow switches and the wind-swept reeds. To excape the fast approaching storm, the water buffalo walks at a quickened pace by the rivulet under the prodding of the herd boy. The herd boy bringing up the rear has turned back to run after his straw hat blown off by the wind, while the boy ahead of him forges ahead; the observant buffalo however looks over its shoulder in sympathy at the boy chasing his hat. This painting is a typical example of the importance given by the Song Imperial Painting Academy to the observation and depiction of details of everyday life.

"The Vendor" morrors the change in children's life caused by the expansion of the urban economy for commodities.

Lovely paintings George. Thanks for sharing with us.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get some of the descriptive captions to match the pictures. I looked everywhere for the water buffalo and a boy chasing his hat lost in the wind.......am I missing something?

Thanks for the info, George!

Meanwhile, here is a small inside painted bottle by Master Liu Shouben painted in 2000 with children at play. The height of the bottle is 35 mm. It is the smallest inside painted bottle in my collection.

Enjoy!

Richard

 Great thread!
Richard,

Thank you both.
