Charll & Steven,

Thank you for your thoughts! Dating snuff bottles is similar to dating Chinese porcelains; unfortunately it is rarely an easy task. The dating ranges of the major auction houses and dealers typically have a wide range. I was surprised Moss's dating ranges were as wide as they are, often spanning over a hundred years. I rarely get to handle decent bottles, and somehow seem to be able to acquire the ones I do see, which is a rare occurrence. I do have many books on the subject, my favorites are; The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle by Moss, The Baur Collection by Nicollier, and numerous Christie's and Sotheby's catalogs (My favorite for the moment is The Meriem Collection, Christie's 2007). I do believe the snuff bottle we are currently discussing is 19th century and I am satisfied with that date range, I am more interested in the quality than a precise dating, which seems to be rather elusive anyway Smiley

Cheers,
Keith

I decided to clean the bottle; the white ground now has a beautiful glow. Here are a few images of the cleaned bottle.

Hi Keith,

That looks really nice!! the black mark are most likely the dirt, actually when you zoom in the photos of some very famous  overlay bottles on major auction houses, you can see the black pitting here and there, I won't be concerned too much about it.
