Here is another unusual 'natural form' snuff bottle.

It is a turquoise bottle of natural pebble form, the smooth nodule-like matrix suffused with dark net-like veins; adequate but limited hollowing. The stopper is of natural coral twig set in a gilt metal collar. Height without stopper 4.3 cm.

Turquoise is a water-rich mineral that forms only in dry regions of the world, where it develops in fine-grained masses. The distinctive blue-green colour is derived from its copper content mixed with traces of iron. Exposed fragments can weather over time into smooth "pebbles", often with interesting shapes, such as found in the present example. Similar examples show up from time to time, as at a recent Bonhams auction.

Enjoy!

For anyone interested in turquoise two recent threads discussed other bottles, although those were of formal shape:

Thanks George,

As some of you may have noticed, the stopper in the photo has no cork. That is because I am still experimenting with alternative stoppers for this bottle. Since making the cork is the most fiddly and time consuming part for me, I leave it until last.  Cheesy
