Hello Everyone,
Can anyone tell me anything about this set of 11 (one is not shown but is similar in style) inside painted snuff bottles that were purchased in Hong Kong in the mid 20th century? The work is done to a high standard. Thanks!
Vaughan

Sorry just realised my photo is too large, will re-post a smaller photo soon.

Hi Vaughan,

Sounds like you are trying to post a group photo. It will be best if you can post individual shots. This will not only keep each image small, but allow readers to see the bottles better.

Hi Vaughan,

They look great as a group. I suspect they are all Shandong School, but as I know little about IP bottles, I'll let the experts chime in.

I love this group of bottle. ofcoz, Tom and George are right about the shandong bottles.

I personally think they might be a little bit later than 50s, since the are all not signed, I assume they are all  later 60s and early 70s Cultural Revolution period bottles. I noticed a bottle is dated Bing wu1966, if its then my assumption is right, they are very well painted, I will say the best examples of shandong bottle of the period.

I am also collecting those kind of bottles, so far I have 4 of them, they are not expensive at all compared with other bottles, but I bet a set like this will getting more and more valuable in the future..

Vaughan,

I agree with Steven's assessment on dating and of the same opinion that this is a superb showing as a group.  I also like this period of IPBs and myself looking building a small collection of them.

Vaughan,

Am I correct in thinking all of these bottles were purchased before 1970? If so, that narrows down the dating.

Thanks everyone for your replies which are as usual much appreciated. Yes Tom these were purchased before the end of 1968 in Hong Kong by my father. I'm looking for a good home for these, they are nice and deserve to belong to someone that would appreciate them more than me - I'm more into mineral and stone bottles. I have about ten elephant ivory bottles that also need a good home but unfortunately this is not so easy due to international laws.

By the sound of it, you won't need to look too far...   Cheesy

Hi Vaughan,

This should be interesting. You don't often see such a homogeneous group of bottles up on eBay. Thanks for letting us know!

I did not understand either. Something was lost in translation.
This is a good example of why (for now) it is a good idea to put messages in BOTH English and Chinese.

我不明白。在翻译中丢失的东西。
为什么(现在)这是一个好主意,把英语和中文的消息,这是一个很好的例子。

I think the 11 are not of a set. They are a collection of 11 bottles, I believe.
It is unusual for the Chinese to form a set of bottles out of 11 pieces. Secondly, if it is a set,
I would have expected that the bottles are all of the same form, shape and size.
My observation for sharing.

I think the term 'set' is being used liberally to mean a 'group' or 'collection' of bottles assembled together.

By the way, I only see ten.

Tom is absolutely right, I cannot be sure that the bottles were purchased as a set, more likely they were bought over a relatively short period of time in the 60's from a couple of shops in HK. There were 11, but one left my collection a while ago and I had forgotten when I started the thread.

Ah, I see where the eleventh bottle came from! I was looking at the eBay listing, where there are clearly ten in the description as well as the images.
