Books, catalogues, and journals are usually very expensive when talking about the subject matter is referencing snuff bottles.

I have been real fortunate to have been gifted books that would have been unlikely to have acquired  otherwise.

Some of the most valuable and interesting of those books have referenced the connection between snuff bottle paintings and scroll, fans, and paintings that describe in detail, themes, scenes, and motifs.

The past few weeks started to search eBay books using search phrases like, Chinese art, history, scrolls, fans, paintings, etc..

Found a great many inexpensive "illustrated" books loaded with useful scenes, and motifs at prices between 10.00 and 30.00 that give good descriptions. some of the better and more inexpensive ones were found under, Books>Antiquarian>Collectible.

Just to give you an idea, here are a few examples of the better ones purchased over the past few weeks.

Chinese Painting by Mario Bussagli, 1966, 150 pages with 74 colored picture plates for $9.00

A Pictorial Encyclopedia of The Oriental Arts, China. Two Volumes, 1969, 180 full-page, full-color and volue ll, 336 full-page monochrome illustrations for 10.00

Encyclopedia of Chinese Symbolism and Art Motives. Compendium of Legends and Beliefs as Reflected in the Manners and Customs of the Chinese Throughout History. 1960, 450 pages for $17.00.

Chinese Art, 1997, 200 pages for 7.00.

George,
I have the three latter books, but will look for the first one. It looks interesting. Of course, I have about 30 or 40 books on Chinese painting...
Thanks,
 Joey

A great start to your Chinese art library George!

The only one I have of those is the C.A.S. Williams book, Encyclopedia of Chinese Symbolism and Art Motives.  It is never too far from my elbow!
