Here are some bottles that are made of unusual materials.

Sometimes you will be surprised by the imagination and creative talent of the artists.

This one is made of dried shark skin stretched over a metal base.

A silver embellished tortoise shell bottle of flattened round shape.

The silver border carved all round with a stylised flower design with both sides embellished with an incised tortoise shell.

One side incised and filled in gold with thirteen Shou characters in different styles. The reverse finely incised with a dragon amidst clouds with a short inscription and signed Li Shi Feng (李石峰).

This is an unique bottle in my collection.

During these years of collecting bottles, I have yet to come across another bottle made of these combination of materials: the bottle has a shark skin layer (dyed brown) stretched over a metal base with a piece of tortoise shell embellished on top on both sides. Each shell is carved with the portrait of a Western gentleman which I assumed it is copied from foreign coins.

For some reason the last couple of posts you have added here did not "light up" so as to know they were here !

I am just now seeing both this bamboo and the last reply to the "The Glory of the Elephant - Ivory Snuff Bottles" thread..

Any way... What a most unusual bottle ! Thanks for sharing it !  Smiley

Hi Richard,

The tortoise one, is one of the best one I had ever seen. How big is it? Is it an antique or one of the modern one? (I am completely at a lost and very confused on how to tell what now...)  The craftsmanship is amazing, and this is all by hand?

The shark skin bottles, are they from Japan? Or made in Japan for sale in China? The reason I ask is because I recall that they like to use shark and ray skin for wrapping the hilt and sheath of their swords, before the metal or wrappings.

Looking at the bottles, kind of remind me of that.

David

Hi David

The tortoise shell bottle cam from an early Hong Kong collector who has exhibited his bottles at the National Museum of History in Taiwan before in 1983. The bottle is 70 mm tall.

The shark skin bottle is Chinese. The Chinese have been using shark and ray skin to make hilt and sheath for a long time in history. It is likely that the Japanese learn this art from the Chinese.

Regards.

Hi Richard,

That is so nice, almost like a coiling dragon coming out of the clouds in the evening or a stormy day. He used the shell so well to highlight the image.

Is this carved form a single piece? Or is it multiple piece?

The back is darker and makes the words so solemn.

I did not know that, we used shark/ray skin on swords too. Thank you.

Best Regards,
David

Hi David

It is made from a single piece of the shell, one on each side.

Regards.

Dear Richard,
thank you for posting these bottles. I particularly like this kind of bottles. The one with mixed turtle and shark skin is really unique.
Kind regards
Giovanni
