This bottle is a little fun and thought there may be some interest in a new thread or even of a board dedicated to contemporary bottles, i.e., post 1950.

According to Y.F. Yang (March 1974, Series No.2 catalog) this bottle is a Shandong glass overlay with carving of the ‘Eight Horses of Mu Wang’.   Circa 1970-71, and this design was available in a red, blue, and yellow overlay.   Height is 7.5 cm including the matching glass stopper.  Sold for $72 at the time.

Beautiful bottle Charll...

I am always amazed at the timing of some topics..

I was looking for some information on a porcelain bottle with horses and water..

I came across this Eight Horses of Mu Wang while searching...

Hi Charll,

That one is very nice, do you know how much will one like this cost now a days?

Do you know if this kind have the same problem that Tom's and Steven's modern glass overlay bottles are having?

Did they made any of Chi-Dragon + ancient longevity symbols or phoenix and dragon ones?

Thanks,
David

David,

In regard to cost, I paid $29 US for this one last year. Thus, not all snuff bottles go up in price.  I've seen them around on various auction sites from $30 to as much as $120.  This is for the ‘Eight Horses of Mu Wang' themed bottles.  A nice yellow was just up at auction recently and if I recall the bid was at the high end of the price range.

I like to pick good quality contemporary bottles every so often as counterpart on a collecting theme and/or as comparison for study/discussion with older bottles.  Specific to this bottle style numerous other designs have been produced, but beyond the horse theme many of them tend to be bird, fish, or floral designs as I recall.

Hi David

The Chi dragon, dragon and phoenix are popular subjects for all Chinese art objects. In snuff bottles, it's no different. You can find them in snuff bottles of different materials, glass, porcelain, ivory, inside painted, etc.

Regards.

Hi Charll and Richard,

Thank you, I will file that away in my head. This is the price range, I am more comfortable until I know more.

Best Regards,
David
