Commonly seen in the "scaly dragon in flight among clouds, chasing a flaming pearl" theme.

Are these a part of the flaming pearl ?

I believe it is meant to be stylised clouds.

George,

From my readings in the past I was lead to believe that it is indeed flames.  This game playing of the dragon with the pearl of wisdom among the clouds creates somewhat of a vortex of swirling clouds and flames as the dragon chases the pearl through the cloud cover.  This is what creates the black smoky coloration in the storm clouds.

Could be, Charll.
But I never learned that Chinese dragons have flames. That tends to be a facet of dragons in medieval European mythology, in my experience.

That was flame.  And flame is a part of the chinese dragon mythology.  In fact, most decorative dragon motif has the dragon chasing after a flaming ball (pearl).  And flames are around the limbs of the animal.

Thanks Walter,

The illustration you've given is how I understood it.  It is a "flaming pearl" that gives off spurts of detached flames as the dragon, or dragons, chase it through the clouds.  And yes, I was under the presumption that these detached flames get caught up in the scales of the dragon during the chase.

Dear all,
those are surely flames. That motif is well known as flames in Chinese iconography. Once I attended at a conference on mythical animals at a museum and they said that the chinese credence of flying dragons could belong from the phenomenon of lightings among the clouds.
Kind regards
Giovanni
