Joey,

I would put it at second half of 20th century, probably post-1960. Any thoughts?

I'm with you Tom...

Here is an old turquoise snuff bottle for comparison / reference, dated to 1760-1860.

It is of flattened spade form with short slightly flared neck and flat lip, tapering to a small, very narrow flat foot. I suspect the lip has been filed down slightly to remove some chipping or similar damage. The material has an even patina of green colour with a few areas of dark veining, and is silky smooth to the touch. This bottle is not to be confused with Imperial turquoise bottles, which are generally much bluer and paler in colour, either due to lack of handling, or (more likely) because the material was sourced from a different locality. This bottle has a coral stopper set in an incised bronze collar. Height without stopper:  5.8 cm

Thank you dear Giovanni.
I bought this one about 10 years ago, from a well-known collector.

Best regards,

Inn Bok and George,

Thanks for your feedback. It is well worn and a little battered, but slips into a pocket comfortably, and a delight to handle!

Here is an unusual turquoise snuff bottle being offered by Bonhams San Francisco.

http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/20989/lot/2698/

I cannot understand why there is so much black covering it. Is the bottle shape following the dark veins?

The black is a matrix, or iron pyrite.

Check the "Matrix" section of this page out Tom..

Thanks George,

So the matrix can be the dominant material in the composition, as seems to be the case here.

Yes, apparently so Tom..

I suppose like any other mineral that is mined.. There are areas that are heavily concentrated with ( in this case ) turquoise, and other sections of the mine that are less concentrated..

The bottles shown are very nice.
Tom, yours reminds me a bit of the one I illustrated in my 1987 catalogue, #35, which I purchased from the late, deeply mourned Eunice Cameron of blessed memory, who worked for HM Moss & Co.
Could someone who has my catalogue post it please?
Thanks.
Shabbat Shalom,
 Joey

Yes Joey,

Your bottle #35 is quite similar to mine. Unfortunately, I have no scanner at home, so cannot post a picture of it for you.

Hi Joey

Here you go.

Sorry, the color of the scan was a bit off.

Regards.

No worries, TomL. Thank you, Richard. I knew there would be someone who could.  Wink
Stupidly, when I had my godson Yousuf here a few weeks ago, I didn't think to have him teach me how to use my scanner to put things on the computer. I use it as a copier...  Sad
He was the one who put the pic of me with Harvey and Barney (my horse and my donkey) on the Forum for me. The congratulations re.my entering the 21st century were a tad premature, I'm afraid.
