All, another unique concentric ring base dragon pillar bottle added to the collection.

Hard Paste Porcelain Dragon Pillar Bottle:
A cylindrical hard paste porcelain bottle with a flared neck to an everted white rim and mouth.  Coil ring construction.  Bottle depicts six dragons in underglaze cobalt blue with a café au lait overglaze.  Three large imperial five-claw dragons traverse the sky of the bottle face amongst clouds of smoke and flames and three smaller subordinate dragons are shown reaching up for the sacred pearl from a unform rolling sea at the bottle base.  Dragon body scaling is presented as a centered dot at each apex of a mix of both individually and crosshatch painted scales, which is a typical design employed in the 1st half of the 19th century.  Five bats encircle the bottle throat.  Unglazed base of 13 concentric rings that is slightly concave, dimpled, to the bottle center.  Stopper is a pink coral cabochon set on a black nylon collar with an old brown stained bone spoon.  Height is 9.0 cm without stopper by 2.8 cm in diameter.

Period: Attributed to Jingdezhen, 1800-1850

Condition: Very Good.  Abrasion scratches to glaze from use.

Provenance:  Laurence Souksi, Espace4 Gallery, Paris, France
Purchased from an Antique Dealer, Normandy, near Honfleur, France

Dear Charll,
Very nice bottle, dragons are very well painted, congratulations.
Strange that it has six dragons instead of the usual five. Are, perhaps, each flying dragon disputing the sacred pearl with one of the swimming dragons? What I mean is if the decoration is actually depicting three couples of dragons, which would make more sense.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Giovanni.

Yes, if you look at it as three pair of confronting dragons that would make more sense from the number perspective.   Charll

I haven't posted anything on the Forum for some time, but wanted to jump in on the conversation.  I have been working to catalogue my bottles and recently noticed that in addition to my pillar bottles which all have the classic concentric rings (see attached), i have another porcelain bottle which has a continuous swirl instead.

Dear FrankG,

Unless you posted under another name, this is your FIRST post.
Be that as it may, BOTH bottles are beauties.
Thank you for posting them.

Oh, and welcome to the Forum. I’ve a mild case of
Aspergers, so I was focused first on correcting the minor error,
thrn on the beautiful snuff bottles, and it’s good if I can focus
on two things. Don’t expect three…  Roll Eyes Shocked Grin
Best Wishes,
Joey

Thanks - you are correct, that was my first posting on this Forum.  But glad to be joining in on the conversation.

Frank,

Welcome to the Forum.  I agree with Joey that both bottles you posted are wonderful and collection worthy.  The concentric ring based bottles lean heavy to the traditional dragon pillar motif bottles, but they are also found with a number of other motifs such as Chinese generals and hero motifs.  I saw for the first time in the last couple of weeks a blue and white landscape bottle with a fisherman motif that had a concentric ring base.

Regarding the continuous swirl ring base, a number of these are around but they seem less abundant in comparison to concentric ring base bottles.
