Forum Bottle in the Spotlight

Charll shared this beautiful Xianfeng (1851-1861) dated bottle depicting NeZha combating the Dragon King amongst a rolling sea of blue and eight mythical sea creatures.

I agree with Joey that the bottle has the right shape for an old one. Look at the slight waist on the neck, and way it 'flows' into the main body. Most modern bottles have a much sharper point of connection - a cylindrical neck 'stuck' onto the shoulders.

I too have a very similar looking one which is dated to 1730-1820. Comparing it to this one, there are some subtle differences:
  - the mask handles are slightly smaller, so that the rings do not trail quite so far down the lateral sides
  - the mask handles are faultlessly carved and finished
  - the recessed foot is so slightly convex as to be almost flat
  - the foot rim is faultlessly finished
  - size: my bottle is only 5.1 cm high

So I have to agree with George's comment about the lack of attention in the finishing, which throws some doubt on its age. Although having said that, throughout the Qing period there must have been differences in the standard of workmanship when it came to private production.

It could be newer than I thought, but I assumed it was 'right'; just not the top quality, as my bottle #33 was, and from his description, Tom L.'s example is.

Thought I would share this most unusual moss agate presently listed on eBay..

I have not seen this beautiful dark colored agate before with the exception of some marcasite from Nipomo California..

I think it may fetch a pretty penny at auction..

Beautiful moss veining. The foot rim is of the 'right' shape for 19th century, but a little careless in execution.

Will be interested to see what it goes for!

Joey,
We aim to please.  You could also write 'ditto' as ' -"- ' if you wish. Either is permissible.    Cheesy
All best,

Tom L.,
Do you mean that   ' -"- ' is a short form for 'ditto'?
I did not know that. But 'Ditto' is more fun. I've wanted to say it since the wonderful scene in Hedley Lamarr's (the wonderful  late Harvey Korman) office in the 1974 movie Blazing Saddles, where he goes on and on, and then his dumb sheriff sidekick says, "Ditto!".
Another thing I've wanted to say since I first viewed "Hawaii 5-O", is "Book him, Danno! Murder One!"
Don't suppose I'll ever get a chance to say that one, though.    Sad
 Oh well...  Cheesy

Joey,
Twin apostrophe, usually but not always accompanied by a short dash each side, is commonly seen in older books in place of the word 'ditto'.
As far as I know there is no short form for "Book him, Danno! Murder One!"   Grin

I just checked. It was "Book 'em, Danno. Murder One!"   Grin
If there isn't a short form, there ought to be.

Joey,
It depends which episode of 'Hawaii-5-0' your are watching. If the culprit is caught with an accomplice, then it's "Book em", but if the culprit did his evil deed alone, then "Book him" is correct.
Of course, if the culprit was a woman, then it would have been "Book her, Danno!"  Grin
Either way, I just loved the opening sequence, together with that theme music.

PS: I've forgotten what all this has to do with Giovanni's "Big moss agate bottle"  Sad

Tom L.,
I still love that music. Of course, I was also always enamoured of the big brawny Hawaiians who were rowing the outrigger canoe (actually, it turns out they were mainly Samoans!), but I digress. Cheesy
Yes, I forget as well how we got on to this  from Giovanni's Moss Agate! This is very Talmudic. In the Talmud, the rabbis are always going from one subject to another, without (seemingly) rhyme nor reason.
So whenever I segue into another subject, I call it Talmudic. At least it sound more impressive than that we just got off topic!   Grin

Dear Joey,

I like that bit about ' Talmudic ' ! An intentional straying away from the main topic of discussion.

Actually, the more you look at the moss agate bottle, the more you can wander into the water around Hawaii, I suppose.
And if the canoe, God forbids, should be turn over by the rough waves, one may find oneself in the midst of green seed-weeds as
shown on the moss agate bottle ?

Regards,

Inn Bok

Thank you Inn Bok, for finding a link (albeit a tenuous one that wouldn't hold water in court) between our digressions and Giovanni's bottle !!!

Yes, Inn Bok, a truly impressive diplomatic effort! Thank you.
This winter, I may head eastward, to Thailand and Singapore, and visit you both as well as whoever else is available in the two countries (John & Penny Ault, Richard,  Pat, etc.?).
Without a vow, of course.

Hi Inn Bok,

I was scheduled to come down again around 6 May, but our project is running behind, so it may be June before I come again. I'll let you know.

Will do, Inn Bok. I haven't been in Singapore or Thailand since Dec. 1999! That is 13 1/2 years.
It is really a must-do, though I may have to wait and combine it with the 2014 ICSBS convention. But I'd prefer to dedicate 10-14 days to Singapore & Thailand.
  Best Wishes,
    Joey

  Thank you, Richard. Much Appreciated.
