Although not as big as the Ji School, the Shandong School of inside painted bottles have a long history.

There are currently two grand masters from this school, Master Li Kechang and Master Zhang Guang Qing.

Master Li used to paint very intricate paintings during his earlier days is now residing in Australia while Master Zhang Guang Qing is now the principal of the Shandong Inside Painting School.

Attached is a later bottle painted with a snow scene done by Master Li Kechang.

Hi  again Richard

You will  find  on the  memory  stick  in the  data  base   scans  of  two   Zhang  Guanqing  books. Some pretty  amazing  bottles  there  !

The   ICSBS  member, Horace  Wong  in HK who   has  over  1,500   modern bottles   told me that  he thinks   he has the  world's biggest collection   of Li  Kechang bottles. And that  Li Kechang,  while  in  Australia, still  paints and   gives  Horace  Wang  right  of  first  refusal  on every new  bottle  ( !)  Also that  Li Kechang  has  recently  been  experimenting with  " new  painting  techniques"  . Not  quite   sure  what that  means except that it seemed to be related  to  how the paint  adheres  to the bottle   and therefore   some new  effects   could be  created.

Cheers  Peter  @  HK

Richard,

Do you know of any history of the early painters of the Shandong School?

Hi Bill

There are three prominent early masters in the Shandong School, also known as the Lu School as Lu is the ancient name for the Shandong province.

They are Bi Rong Jiu (毕荣九), Sun Xing Wu (孙星五) and Xue Wan Jing (薛万京). Xue Wan Jing is also the teacher of the current Master Zhang Guang Qing.

From what I know, the other master, Li Kechang first learn his inside painting art from a nephew of Bi Rong Jiu, Bi Heng Yuan (毕恒元) and later from Bi Rong Ju's students, Zhang Wen Tang (张文堂) and Xue Jing Wang(薛景万).

Hope this helps.

A small wrapped crystal bottle painted by Master Zhang Guang Qing.

Using the small opening in the stone, one side painted with a Daoist preparing medicine on a stove. The other side with the inscription "Ge Hong Lian Dan" meaning Ge Hong Preparing Medicine followed by the artist's signature and seal.

Ge Hong is a Daoist and a famous doctor during the Eastern Jin dynasty. He is believed to have achieved immortality through his practise.

Hi  Richy

About   3  years  ago  when  I  got  really  serious  about collecting  I contacted  all the  HK  dealers/  ex- dealers   that Bill   gave  me  leads  to.  One  was Stanley Y  F  Yang  who  knew  J H  Leung  very well  and  stll  has  some  remanants  of his  collection.

Stanley  offered  me a    Zhang  Guang Qing   ladscape  bottle  which had  won  1st prize  at an  exhibition in Australia  in the mid  1990's   for  HK$17,000.  =  USD2.2K .   It  even had a  certificate .  At  that  time    I never  considered      buying  anything  over  USD1 K  and I had  never  even   heard  of  Zhang  Guang Qing  (  oh....  so  naive !  )   So  I declined the   offer

Later  I  found  out  who   ZGQ  was   !

When I  went  back to   Stanley  Yang a  year  later  ( after  Yantai  2009, where  I  actually  met  ZGQ) I found  he  had     donated / sold?  the bottle   to a  studio  in Qingdao  so that was the  end of that

 Sad

Very  stupid  of  me   !

Cheers  Peter
