Hi,

I recently came into possesion of several snuff bottles and really know nothing about them. Any help identifying these and possible value would be much appreciated.

These 2 are porcelain I guess and marked during the Quinlong period from comparing to signatures I have seen online.

The top on the 1st one has come apart and is in 3 peices.

The 2nd one not sure if it is carved and glazed or enamel with a coral top.

Thanks,
Todd

Dear Todd,
welcome here. It seems that you have a nice collection of bottles. These two are bearing an apocryphal mark, they are both 19th century I believe. The second one is just polychrome enamelled and is the one that I prefer.

Dear Todd,

Really great bottles you got over there, Same as Giovanni, I like the second one best.

I think it really can be dated earlier than 19th, what do you think Givovanni, can it be a period bottle?

Dear Todd,

I agree with Giovanni about your nice porcelain SB's.

The first one has been molded with a decoration known as the 18 Luohan or Arhats of Buddhism.  It was a popular theme for molded snuff bottles and there are several different versions known.  Yours is nice quality for the 19th century, but the original 18th century Qianlong version is much better with additional hand carving after the molding.  Bottles like this are fairly common.

The second one is very nicely decorated and the better of the two.  It is probably from the first half of the 19th century. I am posting an image of an authentic Qianlong M&P bottle with the correct shape for the 18th century.

Best regards,

Tom B.

Dear Steven,
I don't think so. The decoration motif around the base, the type of yellow enamel, and the quality of the decoration are pointing toward 19th century to me. Although this one is of good quality, M&P bottles are much finer. I would like to hear Tom B. about this.

Dear Giovanni,

Chinese porcelain has been your specialty for a very long time, so you are an expert. It quite natural for you to put a date range on most porcelain snuff bottles just by looking at a few images.  There are only a few things that are slightly different in the way things are drawn, but the enamels and paste are the same.

Best regards,

Tom B.
