Hi everyone,

I found a very informative web address for the Bristol City Museum and they have a few IP snuff bottles with vague information.  The images are one described as "1800-1910".  Now I can see that it is dated Bing Chen qiu yue or autumn of 1916 (alternatively 1856 or 1976), but I can't seem to get the name of the artist.  I read it as XX?  Shi Tian.  I can't find a corresponding artist.  When we get this figured out I will write them and inform them of the information compliments of the Snuff Bottle Discussion Forum - a little PR never hurt.  Smiley

Best regards,

Tom B.

Hi Tom

Thanks for the great link.  This is a Shandong bottle, and the date would be 1916.  The artist name eludes me, however.

Hi Tom

Thanks for introducing the Bristol City Museum.

The inscription is not too clear, but can be read as 'Fang Shi Tian', meaning copying the style of Shi Tian.

The year is probably 1916, not totally sure though.

Regards.

I am pretty sure it is a 1916 bottle based on other ones in my collection. The painting style (foliage especially) is Shandong style.  By 1976 Shandong had evolved far away from this under Li Kechang's helm.

Wow, that was fast!

Thank you Pat,

I was fairly certain of the 1916 date, but it always helps to have a second opinion.  I didnt realize it was a Shandong school bottle.

Thank you Richard,

I googled Shitian and found that it was the name of a prominent artist, but couldn't read the "Fang" character.

There is a second IP bottle that they seem to have had someone read the inscription for them, but we can give it a try. They describe it as 1899 and I think I can see Ji Hai zhong qiu yue or mid autum of 1899.  But help me out if there is anything else identifying about it.

Best regards,

Tom B.

Dear Tom B,

As other indicated the bottle is a 1916 bottle, I have a same shape bottle signed by' Xing ting'. 'fang shi tian style ' had been used a lot on shandong bottles.

I can't make out the script on the one on Bristol museum due to the quality of the image, can you share a link with us?

Thanks Steven, good to have another confirmation on the date and Shandong school attribution. It is also good to know that the Shandong artists used fang Shitian often on their IP bottles, that will help to convince the museum’s curator of the attribution.

I posted the link under the topic, Suggest a Website, Auction Site, or Resource.  But here is the link again.
