Dear Tom B,

The script should be a poem or a Couplets, I personally think its more a Couplets.

岁岁平安节,年年如意春。

we can see the two '岁" and two '年' are different written, that is a good sign of well written scripts.

The couplets is a wish for a the coming year, can be translated' peace all year round, and all the best every year'

the bottle was painted in Nov 7th-8th of 1887,  which is a winter begins( one of the 24  Solar Terms in China), people treat the 24  Solar Terms as holiday in China, will have some special events for each solar terms.

Here are the some reference info for the 24  Solar Terms.

The 24 Solar Terms:

  立春Spring begins.

  雨水The rains.

  惊蛰Insects awaken.

  春分Vernal Equinox

  清明Clear and bright.

  谷雨Grain rain.

  立夏Summer begins.

  小满Grain buds.

  芒种Grain in ear.

  夏至Summer solstice.

  小暑Slight heat.

  大暑Great heat.

  立秋Autumn begins.

  处暑Stopping the heat.

  白露White dews.

  秋分Autumn Equinox.

  寒露Cold dews.

  霜降Hoar-frost falls.

  立冬Winter begins.

  小雪Light snow.

  大雪Heavy snow.

  冬至Winter Solstice.

  小寒Slight cold.

  大寒Great cold

The famous qingming festival scroll is also about one of the solar terms 'Clear and bright'

I forgot to mention that the painting matches the script very well,  the vase in chinese is 瓶 sounds same as peace '平' in 平安, also the fungus means" all the best" in chinese.

Hi  Dennis

Please   do not  delete   any  of the  strings  you started

Some of them  have  very  valauable  information  in them   e.g. this   string   with the   24  Solar  Terms

Many   thanks

Cheers   Peter

PS : It's  considered  polite  on the  Forum  to  use   lower  case    script  (  caps  only  for  Titles, Names   etc)

It's  a  universal    protocol  on the  internet that   using  ALL CAPITALS  IS  EQUIVALENT TO  SHOUTING

Sorry  to  have to mention    that,  but  someone  has  to  do  so     Cool

Thank you Tom I will let you all know when I list the little bottle.

Peter you make me feel like I am being bullied in the school yard.  That I need to get in line and obey some
protocol your perception and my intention seem to be at
odds with one another. I have the capability to follow good
orderly direction. In the process get your finger out of my face. (I had to use word and spell ck.) lower case except when I comes to proper names etc. really.  I want to discuss snuff bottles . How about you Peter?

Hi  Dennis

I  do  know  that  "being  bullied   in the   school  yard"  feeling

I  was  that     wimpish  kid  ,  but  I  eventually  rose  to   Head  of  House  and   No 2  Head  of   School   Prefect   despite    all the   bully-ing   in the   3rd   form

But  seriosulsy  :

1.  We  all  want to   advise  you  as  best we  can   -  out  of  pure  love  for   SBs

2.  A  lot  of the  guys  out  there   write  some   really  serious    stuff  and  if  you  delete the     thread  you   automatically  delete   evrything they   ever   wrote

3.  It  IS   considered   decent   protocol   to  use    lower  case    UNLESS   SHOUTING

Cheers,  Love,  Blessings,  Shalom

And  in  true   genuineness

Yours

Peter

Dear Dennis and all,

I don't think that Peter is asking too much and certainly not in a bullying fashion. I would have written you with the same request, but never found the time.  I was probably the person who was most upset when I discovered that you had deleted some of the threads where we discussed your snuff bottles.  I spent several hours of my time gathering information and comparative examples to help everyone on the forum better understand how to evaluate those types of snuff bottles.

Readability of our posts should be worth a little extra effort on our part.  I like to use all caps for a word or phrase that needs highlighting, e.g., WOW!  Right now I am composing this message in Microsoft Word so that it will show me my spelling mistakes or auto-correct them.  I do this so that my posts will be easily understandable to all, even if English is not their native tongue.  If you or anyone else reading this post doesn’t have MS Word or something like it, then I suggest compiling in an email program and using its spell check.

Some of us will remember back when Joey joined the Forum, he lobbied George to change the colors of the display of our messages.  At that time we had a hard-to-read white print on a dark background.  Although it had bothered me, I didn’t comment on it until Joey began to complain. Thank you again Joey.

Best regards,

Tom B.

P.S. – Let me know when this bottle is listed.

Thanks Peter and Tom. The deleting of  my  previously  listed items  has been dealt with…..no excuses. We understand each other. I need your help and expertise to guide me in classifying my small collection. I have nothing
to offer the forum… other than my own self interest in discovering what it is I have. Comparing and contrasting
information related to the items I post for evaluation gives me a starting point. Like Joey said, “You should have come to this forum first, its free!  I NEED THE FORUM, THE FORUM DOES NOT NEED ME!  Have you ever felt defensive in or out of your element? I have asked for help and you gave it to me, thank you. “The sufficiency of my merit is to know that my merit is not sufficient."

Dear Dennis,

Please don't feel that way, you shared your bottle, and a lot of other people also learn from the comments were given by our members, have been saying that, you offered in another way, WE DO NEED YOU, that is a win win situation.

Also I learned “The sufficiency of my merit is to know that my merit is not sufficient."

Thank you!

Dennis,
In Judaism, we are taught, "From my students I've learned the most".
We are all learning, me possibly most of all. And being crazy collectors, we all love to look at snuff bottles of all sorts. We might not buy them, but we enjoy looking at them.

And I loved that St. Augustine quote - Steven, Use it in front of John Hawley next week. He gave me a copy of St Augustine for Armchair Theologians!

Tom B., When I had my eyes operated on so I could see without glasses, the eye surgeon explained that the brain tries to read dark on light; if it can't, it makes the eye strain trying to make sense out of the light on dark. After my surgery, I am eager to preserve my eyes. So I requested the change, and George willingly complied, realising it was better for all.
Thank you George, for being so responsive to all our needs.

Dear   Dennis

Your   somewhat  "sudden"   entry   to the    Forum    stirred  up     some  flack    in  private   off-line    stuff

But    please    think  nothing  of  it ,   because  (  heck  - I  do need   automatic    spell   check    on the  Forum    b-e-c-a-u-s -e !) that's  what the   Forum   is  here  for    inter  alia

So  every     reply    to  your questions   was    enthusiastically followed   up  !   (Sorry  that  there   were  no  VMIPB  bottles   in  your  collection    -  otherwise  I   would  have   personally  contributed    a  lot  )

Welcome   your   every   posting  ,  but   please   don't   delete   threads     because      they   contain  a  lot  of  useful    input    from    other   members   (only the  guy  who   first   started  a   thread  can   delete    that   thread)

And   CAPITALS      are     only  used    for    SHOUTING according to    common intertnet   protocol  -  that's  a lesson   I  learned   very   early   on  when   I   discovered  the   www   and  the  "rules"    for   how  to   write

Love,  Blessings   and   Cheers

Peter

PS      Welcome     any    direct   email  from   you.  You can  find  my  direct     email   address   in the    Forum registry.
I  deliberately  do  not  post  my   email   address     en  claire    because  of   web- crawlers   which  pick   up  genuine
email   addresses     and  then   sell  them   on to   Nigerian   scam   letter   mailing  lists...  or      the    "Canadian  pharmacy"     selling       knock off    viagra   Wink

Dear Dennis,

I have no hard feelings about your deleting the threads, since you explained about clearing your email inbox, etc.  I am quite the opposite and have thousands of old emails waiting to be deleted - probably happen when my computer crashes. Smiley

Ditto everything you guys said.  Especially:

Hi   Tom  B.

I  think  that   last  posting    from  you  just   about   says  it  all

I  just  do  love  to   look   at  snuff bottles  -  regardless   of   what   genre

I  think  this   goes   all  the   way  back  to  my   fascination     with   collecting  match boxes   as a  kid    (a  lot  more   affordable  than   snuff bottles !)

Tiny  pictures   on  tiny  boxes   -  and  so   easy  to   store  (actually   I  still  have  my    matchbox   collection,   which   is  stored   in a   small   suitcase    under the   spare  bed )

I  guess   stamp  collecting   is the   same    sort   of   thing    -   even  easier  to   store

But   now   at  home   I can   surround myslelf   with  pure    inside   painted   art   Smiley

Love ,  Shalom   and   Blessings   to   all  of  you   out  there   in the   Forum

Peter
