Dear all,
I am resurrecting this old thread because I have found and bought another bottle made with the same technique. As you can see it is a simple cylindrical bottle, but the technique is exactly the same.
In the discussion of the hand shaped bottle we have discussed about the way it was manufactures without reaching a sure conclusion. Now I can say that in both cases we can see that the air bubbles trapped in the outer layer , as also the black dots, are elongated. The bubbles are not round, they are oval. This, together with the thinning of the thickness of the outer layer on the sharp edges, is suggesting that the outer layer has been “pulled” over the inner core like a sort of glove. Who knows.
Anyway, I am glad of having two examples of the same type.
Kind regards
Giovanni
PS: I have to add that the new bottle has some age, it has a general surface wear, very convincing.

Giovanni,

Very nice new acquisition!  Now onto how the bottle was made, in talking to glass blowers it is my understanding that it is similar to this paper weight shown in the video provide below.  Your bottle starts out as a “Parison” of white glass (i.e., the rounded mass of molten glass formed by rolling the substance immediately after removal from the furnace) at the end of a blowpipe.  Then it is either a double dip into molten yellow glass or dipped into yellow glass “fritts” (a glass sand) and then dipped into brown glass “Shards” as shown in the video.  Reheated and shaped in a similar process as shown.  Your bottle could have possibly been turned horizontally in a wooden mould as indicated or blown into a vertical mould to acquire the final shape as shown in the picture below.

From someone who is still trying to learn the finer details of this process, Charll

Dear Charll,
thank you, very interesting and most probably the bottle has been molded that way or with a similar technique. Interesting video, thank you again.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Thanks for sharing Charll!

Giovanni

Nice acquisition... you seem to be on a roll.  Seems there are quite a bit of snuff bottles in Italy, which is kind of surprising to me.   Or did you acquire it from an auction house?

Dear Pat,
no, I have found it on Ebay. Despite the provenance (we all know that ebay is a dangerous place) I went without fail on this thanks to the experience of the previous hand shaped one.
Kind regards
Giovanni
