Dear all,
I received this two bottles yesterday. As you can see they are completely different, but they share a common feature that allow to approximately date them.
The first one has an uncommon decoration. Over a black ground there are white spaces decorated with black lines. The black lines are faded; this happens because the lines was not protected. The fading of the black lines was a problem and the way found to solve it was to cover the lines with a thin layer of transparent glaze. If such protective layer is no there as in the case of this bottle, the lines will fade in time. The bottle is 5.5 cm high.
The second one is painted in famille rose enamels with the motif of the barbarian paying tributes. Finely painted I would say, with gilt highlighted lines in the rope and the hairs. It is 8.5 cm high. On the rim there is a worn gilt ring. I have to post the pictures in two separate posts.
The last two pictures (second post) are details of the faces. We can see that on both bottles the figures have upward looking eyes.
This feature was most common during Tongzhi and the first part of the Guangxu period.
By the type of the enamels I believe that the famille rose one is Guangxu. The other one I don't know, that black and white decoration is not so common. It can either be Tongzhi or Guangxu to me. Anyway, late 19th c. for both bottles.
Your thoughts are most appreciated of course.
Giovanni

Great bottles! Giovanni

Both are good looking bottles, I personally like the second one better.

Actually the blackground design is not uncommon for the snuff bottle field as it might not so common for the other porcelain wares, I have seen quite a few of same designs, some are better than others.

I think your date is well be right!

Steven

Thank you dear Steven. I didn't know about the black background being more common on snuff bottles.
Yes the one withe barbarian motif is of good quality, pity it ha sa couple of hairlines in the body that does not reach the rim nor the base. They mast be originated by natural stress, I mean not by external shock.

Dear Giovanni,
I prefer the multichrome enamels on white, to the black bottle, personally. I'd agree for both as to your dating.
Shabbat Shalom,
