Dear all,
thank you. For the record, this bottle is blown, not carved from solid block.

Dear Giovanni,

That's a very nice find. Typically how much do they command?

Cheers,

Dear YT,
I paid it 130 euro plus shipping. I was interested on it becuase it is clearly old and I like very much bottles made of glass imitating other materials.

Dear Giovanni,

This bottle bought from a early 20th collector looks like a blown glass. Dating unsure.

Cheers,
YT

Another one. This is carved.

I am loss when it comes to dating or what do these bottles imitate. Bought them because they look nice.

Hi YT

This is a glass bottle imitating realgar, which is poisonous.

But why you think it is carved?

Regards.

Dear Richard,

This bottle is poisonous Huh

I put a LED light bulb in and saw the interior carved. Its not glass shiny but matt with carved marks. Well hollowed though.

I am going to look up what's Realgar? Thanks.

Cheers,
YT

Hahaha YT!  Grin

All 'bottles' are poisonous to our wallets!  Angry

This is a glass bottle, not the real realgar, so you are safe (but not your wallet).

Realgar is an arsenic sulfide mineral, also known as "ruby sulphur" or "ruby of arsenic".

Regards.

Dear YT,
I have a yellow swirls bottle identical to your one, which I have posted here.
I was asking the same as Richard about your glass bottle imitating realgar. In my opinion it is not carved from a solid block. You can see that around the hole it has the same appearance than the yellow bottle, with circular swirls. For some reason it has been grinded inside. Can you show the base?
Kind regards
Giovanni

Hi Giovanni

I agreed. I have a similar bottle as well and in my opinion, it is not carved.

Regards.

Dear All,
The yellow swirled bottle is obviously copying Baltic Amber (Mi La); the reddish one is copying Realgar, as Richard correctly pointed out.
Realgar was copied in glass because of an esoteric Daoist concept that if you imitated a poisonous material in a neutral material, it would somehow protect you from poisoning. This is what YF told me (re.Realgar).
Re. dating, while I'd date the Realgar to ca. 1750-1820, I would date the yellow to anywhere from
ca. 1830 - 2000. It might well be ca. 1830-1880. But it could be totally modern.
Best,
 Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Dear all,
I do not think that the yellow swirled bottle is imitating amber, for three reasons.
1)   The color is not ok for amber. It is too much yellow; we have to keep in mind that they were masters in imitating other materials with glass, see the second picture below.
2)   The swirls are too much regular for amber, in which case they should have more non-uniformity. The swirls here are more looking like a pattern.
3)   If that bottle is imitating amber, then what material is imitating the red swirled bottle in the first picture below? I am sure I have seen other swirled glass bottles, I believe that they are simply meant as decorative pattern.  Swirled glass is a common decorative technique.
The second picture is showing my glass imitating amber bottle, although this is more of butterscotch tone.
Kind regards
Giovanni

Dear Giovanni,

This is the base. I had a look again inside and it's matt opaque light grey all over.

Dear Giovanni,
Please re-read my post. I wrote BALTIC Amber. Then check my 1987 catalogue, #70. Though I tried hard to check all the colour separations, this one got through.
In real life it is as buttery yellow as the glass one YT posted.
Then google 'Baltic Amber' and check out the range of colours.
Then 'revert' to me (Irish legalese for 'let's talk again').  Cheesy
I am looking forward to freshly made pizza Margharita in two weeks...
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Dear Joey,
I am “reverting” Grin to you that you kindly gave me your 1998 “Worlds in a bottle” and your 2007 “In search of a dragon” books. So unfortunately I can’t check your 1987 catalogue.
Nevertheless, regardless colors to me the other two points are strong arguments.
I hope that Sept 6th will not be like today, it is cold and raining a lot here, the first signs of Autumn.
Kind regards
Giovanni

I will bring you my 1987 catalogue and 1989 addendum.
And pray that 2 weeks today is gorgeous and sunny so we can have pizza in the garden.  Cheesy
Shabbat Shalom,
Best to Betty,
Joey

Please don't, Giovanni. I'm allowed two slices from a large pizza. And can stretch it to three.  Wink
The pizzas we had near your house were perfect size for me. I LOVE pizza (as you saw!). If I have a larger one, I'll eat it. Although on Shabbat, I can cheat, re. carbs....  Grin
Best,
 Joey

Dear Giovanni and Richard,

Does the base of this Realgar imitation glass look like yours?

Still trying to learn how to look at a glass bottle Undecided

Cheers,
