Belle painting is one of Chinese traditional figure painting. Reflecting a specific social environment and to express some kind of aesthetic idea by creating beautiful and vivid women images.

I do not know which group of women the lady in your painting represents.. Perhaps represents a court lady ?  Someone here will know for sure..

George, wow, you gave me an answer I did not expect...how interesting. So a Belle is not a certain person, but a pretty woman representing different social classes? Do I understand that correctly?
thanks, Danna

I think it is more a style of painting.. In this case, the Belle style is representive/reflective to a particular social environment expressed by the painting of beautiful women..

Belle is not a person.. At least that is how I am understanding it..

In French 'belle' is 'beautiful'.  So in this particular context it is used to describe a beautiful woman.

Dear Danna,

I agree with Pat and George,

The traditional "Belle Pattern" painted on the snuff bottles are most likely from the characters of the most famous books form china,

Dream of the Red Chamber is one of famous one.

Since there are 12 very beautiful young ladies in this books.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_of_the_Red_Chamber

Also, Romance of the West Chamber also called 'The Story of the Western Wing' is another famous one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_of_the_West_Chamber

Lots of pretty ladies on that book too.

The one you posted is from 'Romance of the West Chamber', the lady's name is 'Qiao jie' I remember that George has one bottle painted with same lady.

Hi Steven,

How do you remember all these young ladies' names, AND which stories they come from? I am very impressed!
