This is the first snuff bottle I've ever seen. I won it in an online auction that uses credits instead of money so it was free. That's the extent to what I personally know about it. Please, help. Thanks in advance, Mary

Hi Mary,

Welcome to our discussions!

It looks like resin imitating cinnabar lacquer. There has been a lot of recent discussion on this topic, which you may find useful. You will find it at the following link:

Dear Mary,
welcome here. I tend to support Tom's opinion about the nature of the material. Yu should carefully check along the sides of the bottle to see if there is a fine ridge resulting by the joint of the molds. Anyway, what I don't like is the naive style of the oxen. I don't think that a 19th century hand could carve them that way. Even less a 18th century carver. But let hear others on this, as you can see in the thread suggested by Tom I cannot boast a long experience on lacquer bottles:)
Kind regards
Giovanni

Hi, thanks for all you comments so far. The bottle weighs 1.75 ounces. I checked along the edge of the bottle as suggested and it looks like there is a seam around the top. I suppose that means its modern, but I am still interested in learning more. I'm curious about the two scenes. One side the boy is riding the ox, on the other side...? It gets weird to me. Any suggestions? Mary

Hi Mary,

The little boy and his faithful water buffalo are a popular motif in Chinese art. Typically, the boy is seen riding on the buffalo's back, sometimes catching butterflies in his net, or even fishing while the animal wallows in a pond. He is also depicted, as appears to be shown on your bottle here, lying on its back.....contemplating life, or maybe taking a snooze. The boy-and-buffalo scenes are evocative of the idyllic, simple life of country farmers at peace with nature (albeit through rose-tinted glasses). You may still observe scenes like this in Thailand, where I live.

A secondary representation is that of the bond between the fragile small boy and the large powerful beast. There may be other more esoteric levels of interpretation in Chinese culture that I have missed. Maybe one of our Chinese members can expand on that.

It is a most unusual theme for one of these kinds of bottles.. At least I have never seen anything quite like it, and I do like it !

Thanks, the scene is what drew me to the bottle. My oldest son is a Taurus, so the young boy with a bull reminded me of him. He's 20 and getting ready to move out soon so I'm trying to get some nice things for him to decorate with, and this is one of those things. He excited about it. Mary
