Dear Tom,

Was this sold in the Gatsby sale in Nov.1978? It looks familiar. Of course, if you had it in Oct.2014, I would have seen it then.  Grin
Because of the style of the Taotie, I would have said 'flapper period' rather than 'punk'.
But a beautiful wood grain. I love burl wood of all kinds.

I can testify to the beauty of Giovanni's wooden fittings in Italy. The floors, doors, windows, shutters, etc., are really beautiful.
May he and his family enjoy them for many years to come.

And may we all enjoy our collections, families and friends in the same grain (get the 'wood' reference?  Grin)
Best to all,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Dear Joey,

Talking of the flapper period you inadvertently made Arthur Gadsby into the Great GatsbyGrin

I don't have the catalogue from that sale to verify whether the bottle was part of that auction, or changed hands privately on another occasion. And yes, you would have seen it when you viewed my collection last year.

Best,
Tom

Dear Tom,

I should have the first Gadsby sale (Nov.1978), from Sotheby's HK, in Ireland. Unless it was in the job lot I sent to Charll a few years ago.  I may also have the catalogue from his 2nd sale.
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Dear Joey,

I would be interested to know if this bottle was in the auction or not. But no particular hurry - if and when you have the catalogue(s) to hand.

Best,
Tom

Dear Tom,

I will next be in a position to check it after 8.June. Please remind me then, and I will happily check it out.
As well, please ask Charll to see if I sent him a spare catalogue. It would be from Hong Kong, 1. or 2.Nov.1978, from Parke Bernet OR Sotheby's, and the format is 15cm H X 25 cm W (ie, short and long), rather than the traditional shape, if I remember correctly.
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,

Dear Joey,

As soon as you mentioned that the catalogue was from Parke Bernet, and landscape format, I checked my inventory of old catalogues, because I recall having one exactly like that which was given to me by another collector.

Lo and behold - it's the same one!! So I have the 1978 Gadsby catalogue after all. I also discovered that I have another Gadsby catalogue dated 2 May 1991.

For the record, my wood bottle appears in neither of them.

Best,
Tom

Dear all,

Sharing a wood bottle.

Your views on the age, quality, etc are appreciated.

How should one describe the bottle?  laquered on wood?

Cheers,

Curt

Hi Curt,

It looks like black lacquer on a carved wood body, with gilding. Nice bottle.
I have never seen one quite like this example before.

Dating would be easier if we knew a few things:
Is the interior also lacquered?
What does the base look like - is it recessed? is there a foot rim?
How tall is the bottle?

Hi Tom,

It is slightly over 2 inches in height and yes it looks like the interior is also laquered.

Here is the base.

Cheers,

Thanks Curt,

The horse, and its position dominating one side of the bottle, don't conform to Chinese aesthetics. I'd say this bottle was aimed at a Western market. If so, it's unlikely to pre-date the 1880s, but could be as late as the 1940s. Really hard to say, as the lacquer can appear quite heavily patinated with only a few decades of use.

I get a sense it is old. I think certainly 19th.

Didn't we talk a while back about this type of throat.. It seemed like we were using it as possible dating clue.

George,

You may well be right. It's really the way the horse fills the entire body of the bottle which bothers me. This is not a typically Chinese composition.

Thank you Tom and George.

In my opinion, I think it has certain age to it, maybe 19th century.

Yes it is a rather unusual bottle with wood lacquered in black and I have always thought that wood bottles were typically not painted over, leaving the original color and wood pattern.  The raised horse carving with gliding is also unusual.

Opinions from others would be appreciated.

Dear Curt,
It certainly looks to have some age to my eye as well, and I would assume it is ca.1880-1940, and either Japanese or made for the Japanese market. It doesn't look Chinese in style, but could easily be Japanese.
Best,
