Hi All,

I know there was a thread from last year called 'A Few Spoons to Share'. Instead of reviving that one (as it got more into stoppers and corks), I am starting a new post.

These exquisite spoons were made by the late Bob Snively.  It continues a discussion started between Joey (who knew the Snivelys) and myself on the 'Silhouette Agates' post (http://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/index.php?topic=1009.new;topicseen#new).  Although I never met Bob, both he and his wife Jessamine were long time collectors and members of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society.

This thread is dedicated to the memory of Bob and Jessamine Snively. The photos are courtesy of Hugh Moss.

Beautiful! My guess is that it would take more than your $50 for the charity auction your mentioned to snap up one of these, Tom...lol  Cheesy

Tom,
Thank you. This is a wonderful memorial to a couple of truly wonderful, giving people.
They were amazingly friendly and down to earth, but didn't get along with anyone who tried to browbeat them into buying something they didn't want, or to block them from something they did want and felt they had a right to (an incident comes to mind, where a NYC collector who considered herself very sophisticated, tried to pursuade them that they should defer to her in buying a bottle they'd 1.seen first; and 2. actually had in hand! She tried all sorts of BS, but they were having none of it; and they went home with the treasure, to the music of Heavenly choirs!). They also didn't fit into Hugh Moss' and Bob Hall's groupies; they were their own people.
The ICSBS (and the world) are diminished by their passing.

Thanks Tom for sharing,

I actually saw some ones very similar recently, but not this quality.

Amazing! the spoon itself can be a art piece.

Hi James,

That's a good question. I am not sure, as I have not handled them myself.
From the photos it looks like he may have been using an old ivory chopstick. See below...

Tom,

I've seen spoons like these before, especially in crystal bottles, and always assumed they were Chinese, so I definitely learned something.  They are really beautiful!

On this note, I can not tell you guys how many times I have come accross ivory chop sticks in the past 10+ years in China (this is mostly between 1999-2005), but always have been afraid to transport them via air and declined because age and provenance could not be proven, and did not want to go to jail or pay huge fines.  I can kick myself for not being more brazen, given what I am seeing can be done with them here.

Sad sad sad...

Guys, I handled them when I visited the Sniveleys in Issaquah, WA a few times (and always got the wonderful milk chocolate from the boutique chocolatier there! - once, when I visited before or after the annual ICSBS meeting in late April/May, Bob, as a joke, had got me a hollow Easter bunny; I didn't care - I ate the head first, and then broke it up into pieces!), and they were definitely ivory, carved from old ivory chopsticks. In fact, I've got to check, but I think I may just have a spoon or two from Bob in my box of stoppers, spoons, corks and collars.

Tom,
I'll get into my snuff bottle stopper 'fixing box', and check; I know I have some nice spoons, and I don't think I ever used Bob Snively's  gift. I remember I was waiting for another clear quartz (Ted, you are mainly correct; Bob Snively and Jim Pastorick from the ICSBS, and Yuri Ozar, a Judaica artist and craftsman in Israel from Kharkov in the Ukraine) are the only three non-Chinese I know with the ability, skills, and desire to make these spoons (Yuri, as a gift to me).

Joey,
Did you ever find your Bob Snively and Yuri Ozar spoons? Would love to see a photo if you still have them.

Thanks, Tom.
Actually, I've been bodysurfing on Kailua beach, next to 'my' beach, Lanikai. It is only about 1/2 mile away, but since Lanikai has a reef 1 1/2 miles from shore, it's like a pond. Kailua gets nice waves, though small enough for body surfing (actually there is board surfing there as well, where there is stronger surf- it is 5 miles long).
