Thomas,

That's the problem, but a fun one:  my eye is untrained too! I really like the bottles painted by Yan Yutian.  He's actually one of my favorite
IPSB artists.  I can see some details that might look like they came from him, and some that don't.  For example, the horses.  They seem too simple to me, almost cartoonish.  I'd attribute them to Bi Rongjiu, maybe even Yong Shoutian or Liu Qiao.  And, I'd expect horses painted by
Yan Yutian to have more depth and shading like the camels he's known for.  But, I've never really seen any horses painted by Yan Yutian.  That's why I said I never would have guessed it was from him.  Others on this Forum, like Joey, have much more experience with snuff bottles than I.  His book about IPSB is a great resource!  Two of my favorite general books about snuff bottles are by Lilla Perry and Bob Stevens.  But this Forum is an amazing resource, and I'm glad you found it.  Good luck with your search.

Cheers,

Rube.

Thomas,

Check out bottle number 5 on this collection of blue bottles from Snuffbottlecollector.com
http://snuffbottlecollector.com/_antique/blue.htm
I think it may be from the same artist, though I never would have guessed it to be Yan Yutian.
Regardless, I love the side with the horses, so fun!

Cheers,

Rube.

Hi Thomas,
Welcome to the Forum!
Regarding the bottle you posted, can you resize the photos so theyíre not so big?
Itís hard to really see the image when you have to scroll through it, and youíll probably get better feedback when the image is reformatted.

Cheers,
Rube

Adrian,

Very quiet indeed....
Nice bottle.   I agree with you that this looks stylistically like some bottles by Yan Yutian.
Thanks for sharing it on the Forum.

Cheers,

Rube.

Samson,

What a beautiful root amber bottle!  When I first saw it, I mistakenly thought it was burl wood, with all the swirly grain.
The turquoise stopper really complements it well, too.

Congratulations,

Rube.

Giovanni,
Thanks for breaking the silence by informing us about this software which yields such nice results!  And thanks also for posting this pretty bottle, perfectly timed to coincide with the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Hi Everybody,

I'm sharing another bottle with you today.  Measuring 2 11/16" w/o stopper, I'm calling this a famille rose molded porcelain bottle. It has a nice ivory spoon, and was full of snuff (not that that means anything) but it has a fair amount of wear, so I'm thinking maybe Guangxu or Republic?  Any help with the dating is greatly appreciated! In particular, I'd like to know about the shape and how it relates to dating:  taller, and more slender portends later dating?

Have a great weekend!

Kaja,

I remember finding my first bottle in an antique store!  Unfortunately, my sightings since have been few and far between...
Congrats on a modern cloisonne.

Cheers,

Hi Geoff,

I was looking at that bottle, too, but wasn't sure enough about Le San's work to bid.  I love the birds, but had never seen a still life by him.

Regarding his identity, somewhere on this Forum is much discussion about him, and somebody has a theory (maybe Pat?) that Le San and
Bi Rongjui are one and the same.

Congrats,

Rube.

Hi Luke,

I have been on that site to read some of the published articles, like the one all about stoppers, and the journal articles about Apricot Grove Studio,  but am not a registered user. I didn't even know that was an option.

Cheers,

Rube.

Adrian,

That's a beauty!  I like all the different colors represented, and even a bit of clear glass too!

Congratulations, and thanks for sharing it on the Forum. Nice stopper too!

Hi Everyone,

Sorry to hog the Forum, but I can't resist sharing  one more that just arrived!  It's a glass bottle imitating realgar, measuring 2 3/8" resting on a flat oval foot.  Does anyone else see the little Easter Bunny on the bottom right of the first photo?!?  It came from Bonhams' latest offering, and was part of a collection started in Cuba prior to 1950.  I'm not a fan of the stopper, although very interesting (it's carved wood with a brass collar, and with a nice spoon) and am thinking about switching it out for a bright green chrysophase or glass one.  What are your thoughts?

Cheers,

Rube.

Daniel,

The additional photos sure help.  I think you're right, that those are drill marks, especially looking down from the mouth into the bottle.
But, what a nice effect they have!

Cheers,

Rube.
