Inn Bok,

Nice bottle!  It's neat that your bottle and the one from Richard's collection can commune with one another.

Cheers,

Rube.

Jo,

I share your sentiments about provenance adding to the enjoyment of owning snuff bottles.  The more catalogs and books I accumulate, coupled with wonderful stories shared here on the Forum, the more I'm intrigued by the owners themselves.  Congratulations on acquiring such a nice bottle.

Cheers,

Rube.

Adrian,

The bottle you're referring to was purchased at the last Doyle's auction (many of the bottles were) and it sold lower this time.  So did the next plain lapis bottle, much lower, from the Bonhams Auction featuring bottles from the Golder Collection. I'm kinda sorry I didn't bid on that one.
The Ma Shaoxuan bottle sold much higher however, than the Hindman Auction where it was purchased.  It was from the Ann Neviaser collection.  Overall, I felt like the descriptions were pretty "generous" with regards to dating.  One other bottle I found interesting was the one carved from jet.

Cheers,

Rube.

I watched the auction with interest but didnít bid on anything. Many of the bottles had been from recent auctions. Some went for a lot less, and some went quite high.
Guess thatís the nature of the business.

Giovanni,

I'm glad that you posted this bottle as an object lesson on what is being manufactured today.  I agree that technology is making it extremely difficult to tell old from new.  Rather scary, actually!

Adrian or Luke, do you have pics of the other bottles you're referring to?  I only see the one agate.

Cheers,

Rube.

Mat,

You could also test the bottle's specific gravity using a simple kitchen scale.

I'm sorry, but you're mistaken.  This old thread was started by George.

All,

Thanks for commenting on this bottle.

Jason,

I'd call it heavy for it's size. Somewhere, and I can't find it at the moment, I came across a beautiful image of a lac burgaute bottle that was the same shape and motif of the phoenix, which makes me think it could be Japanese. Can you comment on the small discrepancies (gold areas) to the patina? Repairs?
Metalworking and glassblowing?  Impressive resume!

Cheers,

Rube.

Luke,

I, too, am upset about that subscription fee for Invaluable. Not cheap, I might add.  So far, it's only been from Chiswick's that I haven't been able to check pricing for items on my watch list.  The other thing that infuriates me are the astronomical buyers premiums set by the auction houses, ROBBERS!

Cheers,

Rube.

Steven,

This is fun!  I have absolutely no idea, and therefore, I can't make an educated guess (which bothers me) but I'll guess anyway.

Ma Shaoxuan?

It's interesting to me that the archaic script calligraphy is faintly painted differently than all the other  darker calligraphy around it.

Cheers,

Rube.

Steven,

Nice to hear from you!  I saw a beautiful Japanese lac burguate bottle of the same shape and design (Iíll try and post it if I can remember where) which made me wonder if it was Japanese.

Hi Everyone,

Just sharing a bottle I'm curious about.  It's a metal bottle measuring 2 3/4", I think bronze?  And it appears to have silver inlay in the design of a phoenix.  Is this considered niello?  And if so, would the bottle be Japanese in origin?  There seems to be some inconsistencies with patina, due to repairs?  Any help with the dating or any other comments are most welcome.
Although a much nicer bottle, this is one for comparison based on the material, and inlay.

Aren't those by Liu Qiao?

Thomas,

That's the problem, but a fun one:  my eye is untrained too! I really like the bottles painted by Yan Yutian.  He's actually one of my favorite
IPSB artists.  I can see some details that might look like they came from him, and some that don't.  For example, the horses.  They seem too simple to me, almost cartoonish.  I'd attribute them to Bi Rongjiu, maybe even Yong Shoutian or Liu Qiao.  And, I'd expect horses painted by
Yan Yutian to have more depth and shading like the camels he's known for.  But, I've never really seen any horses painted by Yan Yutian.  That's why I said I never would have guessed it was from him.  Others on this Forum, like Joey, have much more experience with snuff bottles than I.  His book about IPSB is a great resource!  Two of my favorite general books about snuff bottles are by Lilla Perry and Bob Stevens.  But this Forum is an amazing resource, and I'm glad you found it.  Good luck with your search.

Cheers,

Rube.
