May G-D protect you and keep you and your property safe through the storm. It is also forecasted that Hong Kong will be hit by one of the most powerful typhoons ever coming Sunday/Monday... Shocked

I remember sitting on their coach in their high-rise apartment with my father and Sylvan brought out wave after wave of padded snuff bottle boxes brimming with bottles for us to look at. I was actually surprised they didn't have more on display, but then again they did have a lot of them!

That must have been an eye opening experience for you Brian! I wish I have more opportunities to visit great collectors to see and handle their exquisite bottles, I think Iíd be excited like a kid finding himself in a theme park... Roll Eyes

Best,
Samson

Thanks for the warm welcome, Samson. Yes, there is definitely a charm to snuff bottles! I do love how there are so many media and techniques used in their creation. And the historical aspect is also very fascinating. I'm actually reading Imperial Twilight by Stephen Platt right now. It's about China and the Opium War that took place in the late 19th Century during the Qing Dynasty. It's mostly from the British perspective, but definitely an interesting read.

Brian

Brian, Imperial Twilight sounds like an interesting read! Thereís another book on the political structure of late Qing and life of the last Qing Emperor (also incidentally the last Emperor of China) called Twilight in the Forbidden City written by Puyiís (name of the last Emperor) British tutor Reginald Johnston.

Glad to know that you had the opportunity to meet with the Golders! I learned from our fellow forum member Joey that they were respectable collectors, and Iím blessed to be able to acquire two bottles from their collection, one of plain white jade and one of root amber with taotie carved on both sides which you can see here:

Hi Brian,

Itís a pleasure to meet you on the forum and a warm welcome!

Itís interesting that youíve come from a collector family. Every collector falling for this miniature Chinese art form finds a certain charm and appeal in it. To me, snuff bottles are a depiction of the history and culture of Qing Dynasty. They are also a platform for many other arts and crafts such as painting, enamelling, lacquer work, carving, etc and an extensive range of materials have been used to make them, which amazes me.

Iím glad that you found this forum and we look forward to sharing our passion and knowledge with you.

By the way, Iím from Hong Kong.

Best,
Samson

Dear Inn Bok,

Indeed, there is no human figure present in this painting. I take your point about the ďsoulĒ but that isnít the way I see it; instead, I think that human activity or ďliving soulĒ as you put it are not necessarily depicted through the presence of a human figure. In this painting, Iíd say it is represented by the presence of man built architectures like the pagoda and pavilions.

Even if itís just about the serenity, thereís something interesting to appreciate here. Donít most of us have to travel away from people and human settlements to experience and enjoy the serenity G-D created nature has to offer? 難得遠離煩囂而心靜....  Roll Eyes Cheesy

Best,
Samson

Dear Adrian,

Thanks! Well I donít see any reference made to ZLY in the calligraphy. It basically describes the scenery painted in the bottle, something like Ďmountains and clouds in the sunset, there are few villages around with no fisherman seen on the river.í It also seems to suggest that the bottle was dedicated to someone as a gift.

Best,
Samson

Dear Joey,

Itís interesting to take reference from the Yin/Yang concept. Thanks for the idea! Iíll consider.

Dear all,

Thanks! Iím really very pleased with this one! Thereís an indescribable charm with these middle period landscape bottles! Now I get to see one with my own eyes!

From the calligraphy work, it also appears to be a gift bottle.

Youíre right about the ďblueĒ Joey, I love the color, itís always soothing and pleasant to see! Roll Eyes

Now Iím going to find it a matching stopper.

Best to all,
Samson

Dear all,

Congratulations to George and Charll for such amazing bottles!

This one really beats me. Iíve never heard of any legend or idiom in relation to a child hiding (or being hidden) in a saddlebag. I canít find any clue even after having searched both Google and Baidu (one of the most popular search engines in China). But the first thing that came into my mind when I saw the decoration was the story of Zhao Zilong (a.k.a. Zhao Yun, an important warrior of the Kingdom of Shu Han during the era of Three Kingsoms) rescuing the only son of his Lord Liu Bei (an infant) from the enemies which was mentioned in the literature of Romance if he Three Kingdoms which is one of the four Chinese literature classics. But then Zhao actually strapped the child around his body rather than hiding him in a saddlebag while escaping on a horse... so not quite the same as what is depicted on the bottles... Roll Eyes

Samson
