General information about the Site

This Chinese snuff bottle community forum is dedicated to the novice, more experienced, and expert collectors. Topics are intended to cover all aspects and types of bottle collecting. To include trials, tribulations, identifying, researching, and much more.

We also freely pour out our pains of spending money, only to later find that our choice in a bottle was not as we expected ! There is no extra charge for our "pain management" program !

We are also working extra hard towards supporting, and giving well deserved recognition to all new and upcoming student artists of "Very Modern" inside painted bottles.

Among other things, donations help keep the forum free from Google type advertisements, and also make it possible to purchases additional photo hosting MB space.

Forum Bottle In The Spotlight !

Another extra special bottle that our fellow collector Pin shared. The "thousand word" classical text is painted by LI Ruchen with a beautifully shaped bottle of upright rectangular form, and sloping shoulders. Congratulations Pin !

Dear Joey,

Absolutely classic! That's just a wishful thinking and a wishful thinking would often fail people if it's taken too seriously. We have a saying in Chinese/Cantonese, there's no cure to stupidity.

Lack of knowledge on the other hand is a different thing. We have another saying "吳下阿蒙,士別三日,刮目相看。" There was an illiterate but very talented and capable general named Lü Meng (呂蒙) serving the Kingdom of Wu during the period of Three Kingdoms. Knowing that he lacked far behind in terms of literary, he worked extremely hard on his study in order to equip himself with more knowledge to serve his lord (Sun Quan - then the ruler of Wu) and his kingdom better. In just a couple of years time he became a chief general well versed in all tactics and arts of war, fundamentally changing others' views and perceptions on him. It's since been an encouraging story studied by many school boys and girls in the Chinese community all over.

Best,
Samson

In the interests of full disclosure,  I must confess that I ate well in the presence of BOTH the Singapore Group in Oct.2014 and the HK Forum members in 2016.

Of course, I also ate well in Piacenza, Italy; Plano, TX; Bangkok, Thailand; Paris, France; NYC; Rio Dell, CA; Palm Beach, FL; Chicago, IL.; and New Orleans; all in the company of Forum members!  Shocked Roll Eyes Grin

There are so many factors to be considered in order to  judge a snuff bottle, if one or two factors are right doesn't make the bottle right.

Dear Steven,

I agree. And when most factors are right then the overall look would likely be right too.

Samson

Here's our response to our Singaporean fellows. We have to keep up with you guys!

After two meetings, finally we have a picture together. Joining us today was my uncle Geoffrey from Toronto, Canada who is interested in learning about the very hobby that his nephew has been devoted to. It was a short but pleasant get together and Geoff had brought over some of his snuff bottles as our dim sum too! Grin (for those who're not familiar with HK culture, dim sum means snacks in Cantonese...)

Certainly I cannot miss this out then!

11  The Gathering / The Lounge / An interesting book on snuff bottle collection of the National Palace Museum on: June 04, 2017, 03:58:10 am
Dear all,

I bought an interesting book on snuff bottles yesterday published by National Palace Museum in Taipei in 2012 titled "Lifting he Spirit and Body: The Art and Culture of Snuff Bottles".

The cover design is stylish and beautiful. The book showcases a significant collection of the museum's exhibits concentrated on but not limited to snuff bottles (also featured are snuff bottles, snuff dishes and some other snuff related apparatuses), many of which are rare imperial treasures.

Here I'm sharing two pages showing a collection of imperial enamelled glass snuff bottles with an interesting looking snuff bottle carrying box. Somehow the box seems Japanese to me...

Sorry if the picture quality is poor (I took them with my phone under insufficient lighting), I'll try to scan more pages to share with you all soon. For now, hopefully it's good enough for the snuff bottle box can be seen clearly... Smiley

Dear Tom,

I noticed that quite a number of bottles in this auction were featured in Doyle New York's auction back in March this year... in fact quite many of them....

Dear Giovanni,

Thanks! Yes I agree that the finishing is not very fine. What is the hot pin test? Could you explain more?

Dear Steven,

I'll make some better shots when I get some free time!

Oh that line!  Cheesy

I too think it's done to depict the change between land and water in the landscape. The two parts are of different level (or stratum)...

Thanks Adrian!

Hi Steven,

Thanks for your comment. The smell is noticeable when I stick my nose to the bottle to smell it. I don't do it this much these days as I read that cinnabar contains toxic mercury... Roll Eyes

With horizontal lines, did you mean the horizontal pattern on the upper part of the bottle? Please let me know which part of the bottle you wish to see detail pics for, I'll try to take it.

Samson

That's quite something, newspaper headline! Did you tell her that her initiative to establish the HK Palace Museum is great?

You've got a point Pin. But I wonder if cinnabar or lacquer itself has any odor?...

Dear Pin, Adrian and George,

Thanks! Well Adrian, I never thought that it could possibly be Japanese made, so that's interesting to know. I'm impressed by the attention given to the hidden details by the makers of objects like this.

And one thing, I wonder if it's normal for cinnabar lacquer bottles to have a strong odor. It resembles the odor of oil paint to me.

Samson

Hi Peter,

I see that as "寫" which means "write". The statement read "written in Yihu Zhai in the autumn month of the year of Yihai. Guoshun"
