Hi Inn Bock,

Thanks for posting,  I have never seen anything like it before. I would love to make room for it on my shelves.

Regards Jason.

Dear Joey,

Thank you for replying, and it is nice to know the Thais do or did take snuff as I have spent some time in that part of the world but never seen it myself.

Kind regards Jason.

I don't thjink so. Some shapes are good, some are completely off for old bottles. And all them are alcking any sign of wear.
Kind regards
Giovanni

[I/quote] I agree 100% no sign of wear at all.

Regards Jason.

When I saw these a few days ago I thought new, they just have that look about them, but then why the nice stoppers? When I see a group so similar it always rings alarm bells. But hey what do I know, They could have come from a collector who liked a certain style of bottle, I know I collect specific styles of bottles.

Hi Rube,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you I have been away on holiday.  Grin I cannot comment on the inlay as I don't have a clear enough view, it does look yellow indicating gold or some other yellow metal, something zinc based.? But again given a gentle rub it may turn more silver looking. On the third picture of the side of the bottle you can see two colour  discrepancies one on the neck and another towards the base indicating the use of a softer metal to repair a dodgy casting implying the bottle has some age, as today it would be easer and quicker to melt it down and start again. As for my many and varied career, I'm afraid I am a restless soul who loves to learn new things but then gets fed-up rapidly. Not a good trait to have.   Roll Eyes

Kind Regards Jason.

Hi Rube,

Interesting bottle you have there, I agree 100% with what Joey posted. Plus my own observations as follows. Looking at the legs and feet of the mythical beast it looks Thai or possibly Indian. Do Thais take snuff? However there also appears to what could be a string of coins on the top left so I am at a bit of a loss regarding origin.  As for material, I was a metal worker for many years but the patina makes it imposable to say what is for certain, Brass or bronze. It looks cast which has be leaning towards bronze, but it could be brass, is It heavy or reasonably light for its size? Indeed the spoon looks copper but this could be due to being immersed in snuff for long periods of time. Try giving it a rub along the edge of the spoon. As for age It certainly isn't new. Sorry I haven't been  much help. Grin

Kind regards Jason.

Any one who has not been to Liverpool will find it a friendly little city, and I personally find the peoples friendliness a joy. Unlike a lot of city's  I have visited.

Hi Joey,

I have not been on the site recently for various personal reasons but have just noticed this post. You may have problems getting into the terracotta warriors. I was in Liverpool 2 weeks ago and tried to get to see the exhibition, I found they were booked up for weeks in advance, It may be a wise idea to have a plan B.

I also remember gong to the Lady Lever  Gallery some 10-15 years ago  only to find the snuff bottles were not on display! Please don't just assume they are there as they do alter displays. Best check first.

I may well be able to make the Friday as I don't live a million miles away. Unfortunately I have to earn a crust on Saturdays.

Kind regards Jason.

Dear Inn Bok

Interesting bottle, certainly agate but what is it ? One image  makes it look like Crayfish with small claws, whilst another makes it look like a Hermit crab with a small shell! Undecided thanks for sharing.  Wink

Hi Luke,

Thanks for the comments. I'm always happy to come up to London, we need to see if Jason will come as well. I think I said before when a meet was mentioned that a trip to the V and A might be nice to work into a meet. I've been there a few times before but never looked at their snuff bottles or inro. I'll bring a decent loupe to see the 100's of layers.

Regards, Adrian.

Thanks for the invite, If work permits I would love to come. Grin

Nicely  carved bottle Adrian. If the internal tube bothers you, you could cut it off with a suitable shaped diamond cutter, but I don't know how you would get the tube out afterwards! I admire  courage in buying a lacquer bottle with out seeing it in the flesh, that is something I would never dare do, as looking at  a picture I am never shure what the bottles are made from.  If you don't mind me asking were did you buy it from?

I need to apologise to you all. Embarrassed I've realised  I did see a member of the dragon family when I was in my 30s many years ago. Roll Eyes I went to the Komodo island and saw the dragons there, I actually bought a goat from the local village people (not YMCA) to feed them. ( I will try and find the photos ). I went with the holiday company  Explore highly recommended if you like that sort of thing. Grin Wink

I don't wish to be a party pooper  but I don't think Dragons are animals, they are mythical beasts.  Roll Eyes Grin

Adrian.

A very interesting comparison, it's always informative to see two similar bottles side buy side. My only comment is has the bottle on the left been to the Christmas party as It appears to have a slight list to the left, or is that down to camera angle?

Kind regards Jas.

Hi Jason.

Totally agree about some postage charges from America. I'm watching a number of bottles with postage costs of nearly 60 for a single bottle. Add on a 20 percent import charge and a 8 handling fee as the import duty isn't prepaid and the cost becomes prohibative on cheaper bottles.

Some sellers use a service called Global Shipping which is far cheaper, around 18 a bottle or 21 for 7 bottles I bought from Bill. You also pre pay the import duty so save the 8 handling fee.

I buy books from Amazon that are posted from the US and it costs less than 3.

I agree 100%, even re the books from Amazon, although I do remember reading books are exempt from some charges. Wink

Looks like a nice addition to any ones library, I would love it, but refuse to pay the ridicules postage charges on items from the US. Shocked

Hi Tom,

If you are ever in London and have some free time I would always be happy to meet.

As you are the only one to comment it might be a somewhat subdued affair  Grin

Regards, Adrian.

I quite fancy a UK meet! How many on this forum live in the UK.

Regards Jason.
