Here is a specific gravity chart and a Mohs hardness chart that might help.  https://www.finegemdesigns.com/gemsspecificgravity.htm

Thank you Ileney, I will look into this further when the bear arrives. Wink

Hi all, firstly I would like to thank the three of you for your comments. Until I have the bottle in my possession I can not add much more. Having looked again at the bottles I can only say, that the bear is indeed more unusual than the cicada which was why I bought it. If it started out as a snuff bottle I don't know? Having blown up the pictures I can confirm the white specks appear to inclusions they are all over the bear if you look closely. All the time I have been working in glass I have never seen bubbles that minuet.  If you look there are also flaws in the material unlike anything I have seen in glass, The front leg two wavy stripes on it one white with a yellow one underneath and down towards the foot is a brown broken line. Also along the side of the bear  are light wavy lines continuing onto the back leg. which look like natural mineral floors to me. If you would like to post these pictures  on a lapidary forum please feel free. Finally although the head and back are smooth  there are a lot of hair marks on the rest of the bear but you can only make them out on the neck just before the  leg, there are some white slashes and also along the back edge of the front leg there are carved indentations which are also hair marks. The lack of detail is due to the bear being backlit which does it no favours. Ileney I will also look into the fact you think it may be Chalcedony, thanks.

   Kind regards Jason

Hi All
As promised herewith 2 pictures of snuff bottles. Your comments on the minerals they are made of would be appreciated. Many thanks.
Kind regards
Jason

Edit.  The Bear is 2 1/2" long, the Cicada 3 1/4"

Hi, Ileney,

I will post a picture of both bottles from eBay within the next 48 hours. Although they are not of the best quality I suspect they will do the job.

   Kind regards, Jason.

Hi both,

Thanks for your replies.  The seller is away until the end of the month so I shall not obtain the bottle until then. But I will try and post something when I get it.. I have to say there is no banding on the bear and it looks like no Agate I have ever seen. It is a uniform soft baby pink throughout with out any floors in the material I am able to see, that was another reason I bought it. It is opaque, but you can see light, back lit from a window shining faintly through the ears and feet.  Any Ideas what else it could be.

   Regards Jason.

Hi all,

I know many of you are much more experienced in stone and mineral bottles than my self, but can any of you tell me the difference in the above. I was looking on eBay this week and a lady had a few snuff bottles for sale, two of which I was very interested in. The first was carved pink agate bear with black agate eyes, which was a bright baby pink described as a snuff/opium bottle. The second a rose quarts carved Cicada snuff/opium bottle. I'm not sure why they were described as dual use, she probably thought there were more opium takers than snuff  in London. LOL. However I thought Quartz and Agate  were both virtually the same. I bought the bear on a make an offer just because I didn't own a bear snuff bottle. It looks as though I may have made a mistake, the cicada bottle is now at 320.00 with 6hours to go! Dear Giovanni,

The answer to that is yes, I looked as carefully and could see there was no structural damage and as I liked the effect I would have bought it. However I am not like a lot of collectors on this site. I will buy new if I like it and the quality is there. Although I obversely prefer old.

   Kind regards Jason.

Hi George,

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, old or new the calligraphy must say something or are you implying it is fake calligraphy and is therefore unreadable.

Hi Giovanni,

I to was looking to bid on this bottle,  but it was at stupid o clock at night and I fell asleep watching a film! Embarrassed  It didn't bother me that it wasn't the real thing I just liked it as I hadn't one like it in my collection.  I found your comments very interesting. If you were in the ceramics industry recently you will undoubtable be aware that you can now by crackle glazes that produce the cracks in the kiln, this save you risking breaking the bottle when you cool it down. I only know this as I grow bonsai and used to make my own pots when I lived in a more accessible part off the UK.

Rube, congratulations on your detective work and what a coincidence your brother has the other one. I have to say the manufacturing looks identical, I just prefer the execution of your brothers.

Hi Brian,

What a pretty bottle, I thought I had seen it before on eBay and I echo what Charll said. However I think thy were made many years apart although both very competently. My reasons for this is the staining on yours looks fake and applied. I always say applied stain equals fake.   On the eBay one it is more natural also look at the leaves on the tree above the stag's head. Much better quality on the eBay bottle. What do the rest of you think? That being said I like it and wouldn't mind it in my collection.

   Regards Jason.

Yes thanks George, do you mind telling me by what wizardry you put those arrows on the screen. I'm a novice when it come to that soet of thing. Embarrassed

I think you missed a couple as well, One between the two rooves and the  hill the temple is on and another in the tree foliage.  Wink

   Regards Jason.

Yes there are several more...

When I "right click" on an image stored on my computer, then select "edit", it will bring up this editing program called "paint" .. You should have the same or something similar.

Then just pick the color and arrow, circles, square, etc.. When your done, go to "file" (upper left of page) and scroll down to "save" for leaving it in the same file it was stored on your computer, or "save as" to move it to another file location.

Thanks George.

Another nice bottle you have there, well done, as for price, I don't know if you are aware but at certain times of the year articles  on eBay can be bought more cheaply. Namely kids school holidays some  sporting events really bad weather. People have other things n there mind. Grin

As for cracking bottles! I broke a very nice glass bottle myself by putting it in warm water that was to hot. Roll Eyes

Hi Albert,

Nice new bottle, I often buy new glass bottles if the subject matter is to my taste, I am a little specific in my tastes! I agree with what has already been said and I to think the deer bottle is newer than stated. My reasoning is the colour which has not been mentioned previously. Recent bottle makers are more adventurous with their colour choice and not always for the better in my opinion. As for the excess of carving on new bottles, you have to take into account of the modern tools available today which makes carving  much easer and quicker than the past.
