Dear George and Joey ,

Usually we see boy playing flute on the back of buffalo. What I like In this carving is the  dynamics of the tethered straw hat being blown away from the boy. But then the blessing as represented by the bat, [ 蝠 ( fu ) ], same pronunciation as 福 (blessing ), descending upon him adds to the dynamics !

Hi all,

This is an agate floater ( 50mm high x 44 mm width ) I acquired from Richard.
The subject is self explanatory from the picture. The obverse face was left plain. The bottle rests on an oval recessed footrim.

For sharing.

Hi Stew,

Nice botttle you have !

Any possibility of you taking a close-up picture of the short-necked area of your bottle ? Just curious how the it was carved and polished there,

Thanks.

Good craftsmanship for a bottle made about 40+ years ago.

Hi Luke,

Sorry for not responding earlier as I have not visited the Forum site for the last two weeks. My apology.

The link sent by you showed a bottle similar in design idea from mine, except the bottle in the link is a bit more bulbous in form.

Brian,

You are in the right network as far as SB is concerned.

To me, Joey is a walking encyclopedia on ' who is who ' in the snuff bottle collecting world  Grin Grin.

Tom,

The dish was among some of the e-auction pieces from a Beijing auction house Richard Baey and I participate via WeChat network. I got this one and another porcelain dish from the auction. Richard had visited the auction house and known the owner perssonally. In fact, the owner is known to a number of Singaporean SB collectors. The bottles and dishes are originally in the possession of Taiwan and PRC Chinese collectors.

Brian,

Your ivory bottle was very intricately carved indeed. The 3-D effect was very impressive, showing the rounded form of the small figurines ( i reckon about 25 of them all round the bottle ? ). Congratulations !

Dear all,

I recently acquired this brass snuff dish which I reckon to be of the Qing period. For sharing purpose.
The base has the inscription of some workshop 【 金艺坊 = goldsmith workshop 】I believe.

Dear Samson,

Can't agree more with you !

Sometime I do like to look at a chinese painting without a single figure in it, trying to enter the world of the artiist as he presented the undisturbed scenery. A bit like when I read 陶渊明's poems.

Tom,

Thanks for your brief note. Mine should be described as ' concave recessed base with no raised foot '.

Sam,

The scenery painted was really so classical. It was very serene and without a soul as suggested by the text
不见渔郎到。But I seem to see a blur figure in front of the boat (at the bottom left corner of the bottle). Can you confirm my observation ? Otherwise, the whole painting is really without any 生气 ( living soul ) !

Adrian,

At first I too thought that the material was agate / chalcedony. But the artist, who incised his name
[ 林飞 ] ( Lin Fei ) along the lower half of one of the shoulders, apparently made this bottle out of some ramnant small pieces of Shoushan stone. He usually carved objects double the size of this bottle. This was confirmed by his lady partner-in-business. I did not manage to meet him when he was in Singapore, otherwise I would have a picture taken with him and the bottle in my hand  Smiley Smiley Smiley

The ample space on the bottle as commented by you fit well with the traditional Chinese painting of avoiding ' crowdedness '. Like other Shoushan objects, once a while I have to oil my hand a bit and then fonder this bottle to prevent it from ' drying up '.

Adrian,

The raw look of the stone carve wth this subject is really very pleasing to look at. The carving was quite well executed to me, crisp and defined. As ' soapstone ' comes from different locations in the mountain areas around Fuzhou city in the Fujian province of China, they vary in quality and textures. some of my friends collect soapstone [ 寿山石 ] carvings and my understanding is that soapstone snuff bottles are not many to come by. I have one done by a middle-aged Fuzhou carver, Lin, whose head of the family is renowned for carving polar bears with soapstones.
