Dear Ileney,

Lapis lazuli with the right matrix is always a beauty to behold. I like lapis as well but so far I have not yet had a bottle of this material. Glad you have acquired it.

Adrian,

The bottle you posted is really beautiful. Well faceted to me and the color is just the right tone.

Dear Ileney,

What a pair you have brought about ! Interesting works of art.

This type of work is really time consuming, something I appreciate too.

I kept two to three snuff bottles of this type to appreciate the workmanship and the process of making them.

Dear Rube,

The ancient animals are generally known as Divine Creatures 神兽(shen shou). Each of these animals do have a name but due to variation in carvings, some are difficult to identify. In pictures I posted, the animals depicted are not identical ( except the rose quartz and the lapis lazuli ones ), only closely resembling one another

I believe the animals as shown in my collection are among those animals called 樽兽 (zun shou). They are commonly found on roof tops, end of the main ridges, of temples and palatial buildings ( see pictures ).

Steven and other experts on the Forum may wish to comment on this, please.

Thanks Peter for digging into the DB !

Dear Rube,

In the bottle, the two  chineses characters indicating the year painted could be 壬子 ( 1972)or if the artist's
brush stroke were a bit off, 壬午(2002)。If it is 2002, then Mo Shi could possibly be a student painter of Mu Peng going by Peter's reasoning  Cheesy Cheesy.

My speculation.

Dear all,

As with other fellow Chinese collectors, my family has just finished observing the 15-day Chinese New Year ( last day was Friday 2 March 2018 ). And on Friday night, I gathered my sons and their respective families to have a steamboat dinner, despite the 28-29 degree weather !

I have been slow in putting these photos for sharing. However, after having the usual monthly  afternoon coffee with Richard Baey and another Singaporean collector this , I thought I better not delay any further.

These few bottles have been acquired over the years because they did not come by my way so often. The first bottle, the rose quartz one, was acquired in Penang, Malaysia about 25 years ago. Posted here for sharing and for your comments, please.

Dear Rube,

Your inside painted bottle was by the artist with the pseudo-name Mo Shi 墨石 (Mo=black, Shi=stone) and he painted it in the province of Hebei which borders Beijing. The year of painting as written was Ren Zi (壬子) which is 1972. One side was painted the Qing Kangsi Style vase with lotus flower/twigs motifs, and the other side a Tang Sanacai waterpot.

Peter Bentley can shed light on the background of the artist.

I forgot to add one more reason for acquiring the large bottle.

I have a soft spot for double-gourd shaped bottles !!

Dear all,

It has been a fairly busy time for me as my family prepared and celebrated the Chinese Lunar New Year of Dog.
By the way, we are just into the 5th day of the 15-day Chinese New Year. Some Chinese who observe the tradition would be welcoming the God of Fortune today  Cheesy Cheesy

Back to the bottle I posted. Indeed, the seal mark at the base of my large enamelled bottle was NOT incised and filled. So according SB experts, it would not be of the Qianlong period and definitely not ' by the imperial command ' of the Emperor !

Actually, Joey, is it the general conclusive views of SB experts that only glass bottles with incised+filled marks are of the Qianlong period ?

For me, I bought this large enamelled on glass bottle for the following reasons :
1. It was aestatically appealing to me when I first saw it standing on the shelf in that antique shop in Singapore.
The contrasts of the enamel colors and the amber color glass were just lovely to my eyes,
2. The execution of the enamel paintwork on the glass surface was well done to me. They had that feeling of
'softness' and 'fluidity'. Some of the enamel-on-glass bottles I have seen appear stiff and lifeless,
3. The application of the multi-color enamel, from light to darker tone, was well executed, considering the firing
    process that would follow,
4. My assumption that the bottle of 10cm was not meant to be carried about, but to be placed on table top for
storing larger quantity of powder which would be transferred to the more petit bottles in the owner's palm.

I think the bottle was mould blown and then faceted to the 8-sided panels.

Dear Joey,

I could not agree more with your comments.

There are still a lot of top quality bottles we might not have seen, even though many had been acquired over the last 100 years by Western collectors of Asian, especially Chinese, works of arts. We have also heard of stories of so called ' gurus ' who said certain bottles were ' imperial ', only to be disproved later by new researches or evaluations by records surfaced by museums in Beijing and Taipei.

I have seen some very exquisite bottles in the hands of certain collectors in Singapore which I would say are of top qualities, probably of imperial qualities. The collections were previously in the hands of a small circle of goldsmiths in Hong Kong.

Dear Joey and Giovanni,

I share your experience.

As a Chinese, I learn a lot more by being on the Forum. The information and leads posted by fellow collectors and friends on the Forum always bring new insights on things related to Chinese culture, Chinese arts and crafts which I overlooked before. Your contributions on the technology and processes related to snuff bottles production and reproduction have sharpened my ability to discern and differentiate the different standards of bottles.

Dear all,

Just to share a glass bottle I recently acquired. It is about 10cm in height ( makimg me to think that it could be a table top bottle to store larger amount of snuff powder ). The amber color glass has external enamel painting of floral design. Under the bottle is a four-character seal mark of ' made in the period of Qian Long '.

For your views and comments please.

Thankk you for sharing, Kaja.

I cannot help on the age of the bottle. The way the black 'needles' spread out is very pleasant to the beholder !
Such type of bottle is also one of my favourites. Is your bottle about 50mm high ?

Dear Kaja,

Sorry for late reply. Just read the thread.

I bought the ' winter ' bottle in Oct 1993. The bottle was painted in the same year.
