Title: A root amber bottle Post by: samsonlzj on May 07, 2018, 11:59:10 pm Dear all,
It’s been some time since I last shared a bottle on the forum. This time I’m sharing a recent purchase of mine, a root amber bottle. It’s the first amber bottle in my collection. Hope you all like it. Provenance: Dr. Sylvan and Faith Golder Collection. C.K. Liang, Hong Kong, 1976. Best to all, Samson Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: Fiveroosters aka clayandbrush on May 08, 2018, 12:22:25 am Congratulations dear Samson, nice pattern and for what we can see in the pictures the carving is of high quality.
Really nice bottle. Giovanni Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: Joey Silver / Si Zhouyi 義周司 on May 08, 2018, 03:21:30 am Dear Samson,
As you know, I saw this bottle in your home in Mongkok, Hong Kong last week, and told you I gave it a ca.1780-1830 dating. One thing about the photos - you need to add a face-forward photo of the taotie, for people to be able to judge the quality of the carving, which I quite liked, though it is not first rank quality. I have a feeling that was the gentle suggestion by Giovanni, re. "...and for what we can see in the pictures..." ::) :o ;D And thank you again for our expedition via Star Ferry and walking to and from the Manchurian Chinese restaurant. I really enjoyed the day. Best, Joey Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: Rube on May 08, 2018, 06:22:14 am Samson,
What a beautiful root amber bottle! When I first saw it, I mistakenly thought it was burl wood, with all the swirly grain. The turquoise stopper really complements it well, too. Congratulations, Rube. Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: Fiveroosters aka clayandbrush on May 08, 2018, 07:01:00 am Joey, you have the ability of exactly "reading" what I think but often omit to say clearly.
I am bit worried ;D ;D Kind regards Giovanni Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: Kaja on May 08, 2018, 08:50:30 am That is beautiful. Looks as though it would feel wonderful in the hand.

My late mom would say, "Great minds think alike, and fools seldom differ!". The question is, which are we? ::) :o ;D Best, Joey Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: Wattana on May 09, 2018, 12:43:58 am Hi Samson,
Congratulations on your first root amber bottle! Very attractive swirl patterns. Best, Tom Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: Fiveroosters aka clayandbrush on May 09, 2018, 02:14:37 am Nice say dear Joey, and it has validity too!
Kind regards Giovanni Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: Joey Silver / Si Zhouyi 義周司 on May 09, 2018, 01:57:10 pm Dear Giovanni,
I thought you'd like my late mom's saying. She had a lot of sayings like that. Best, Joey Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: OIB on May 27, 2018, 09:57:29 am Dear Samson,
The surface as well as the color textures of your bottle was just great ! Very beautiful indeed. Indeed if you have not indicated it as root amble, I would have thought the material was of some kind of wood, well polished to bring out the grains. Inn Bok P.S. : I am three weeks late in responding. But better late than never. Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: rpfstoneman on May 28, 2018, 11:22:57 am Samson, I'm late in responding to this post as well. I love this bottle so much for the same reasons as Inn Bok and am so green with envy (;D) that I just could not bring myself to respond. Beautiful bottle, Charll. Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: samsonlzj on June 03, 2018, 06:53:32 pm Dear all,
Thank you so much! I’m glad that you all like it! Thank G-D for letting me have this one! Sorry I’m late in replying as I’d been very busy in the past half a month or so due to my exams. Hooray it’s finally over and I’m done with my first year of law school! Yes Joey and Giovanni, I’ll post some pics of the bottle’s taotie tonight! Best to all, Samson Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: Rube on June 03, 2018, 08:39:43 pm Samson,

Lovely colours to the bottle and very nice taotie. I hope your exams went well. You could hint to your wife about finding you a bottle with a "good luck in your exams" motif ;D Regards, Adrian. Title: Re: A root amber bottle Post by: Joey Silver / Si Zhouyi 義周司 on June 05, 2018, 03:30:50 am Dear Tom,
For Amber, they are 'very nicely' carved, but not 'superbly' carved. It is a very soft material. In the late 1980s, I got another bottle, almost identical to the one that Adrian bought recently, but with really superbly carved, extremely ornate taotie. On another subject, have you heard of the two collectors one Greek and the other Greek-British, who Georges mentions? I'd not, till he gave their names. Best, Joey |
