Title: Need Help with the Artist
Post by: MingWu on June 10, 2017, 05:50:52 pm
Hi all,
Does any one know about this artist? I couldn't find any information about this artist. I think this is the modern period SB.

Regards,

Ming

Dear Ming,

There is a great deal of debate about who painted the bottles like yours.
We have a very long thread on it that you can read here:

So obviously my vote would be a student of Yong Shoutian, but others disagree with me, so best to make up your own mind ;)

It really can be difficult... But I agree with Cathy... Likely a student of YST...

Congratulations Ming ! Nice bottle !

Ming,

Looks like it is possibly a Liu Qiao signature. But whether painted by LQ or a YST student, I cannot say.

Thanks Brian. Yeah, it is Liu Qiao's signature but not sure it is real or not. Also, I couldn't find any information about Liu Qiao.

Ming

I am not 100pct sure but I don't think I have ever seen a warrior bottle signed Liu Qiao. This could explain a lot about the unsigned warrior bottles that are not in the typical colors/hues of Yong Shou Tian.

I have a warrior bottle signed Liu Qiao

I call this the "key" bottle that unlocks the mystery because it features his more typical type of paintings on one side, and the warriors on the other.

It looks like Ming's bottle would be the second warrior bottle I've seen signed by him. I think the evidence is piling up!

Cathy

Thanks for posting this one... this may indeed be the missing link to many of the other warrior bottles that just didn't look like YST.  Great....

Someone in China once told me that Liu Qiao continued painting until right before WWII (say probably until mid 30s given the Japanese occupation of China).  This could explain so many other warrior bottles that are clearly NOT YST.

Thanks Pat! Yes, he was quite prolific and mostly signed YST - I am guessing he was a student of his.
I also think that they were done in haste in order to make a living, and unfortunately have devalued the "real" YST bottles by association.
