Title: My beloved nephrite bottle
Post by: samsonlzj on April 09, 2017, 11:15:12 am
Dear all,

Here I present to you my one and only nephrite bottle in my collection. My most beloved piece! My holy grail! :)

It is circa 1760 - 1800, carved front and reverse with flanking archaistic dragons and believed to be the work of Palace Workshop.

Provenance:

Robert Kleiner Ltd, London, UK 2005.
Ex. Dennis Boyer of Laguna Niguel, CA.
Ex. Patricia Miller Collection of Honolulu, HI.

This is the bottle that I am most proud of having in my collection! Simply enchanting and priceless!

I've tried my best to take good quality pictures of the bottle. Hopefully, they do justice to its glamor. ::)

Enjoy!

Best to all,
Samson

Dear Samson,

Congratulations!  A bottle good enough to grace my collection!
Wonderful, and superbly photographed. The detail is easy to see, which is often hard when photographing carved white Nephrite Jade. Well done!

Incidentally, Dennis Boyer is the late Patty Miller's son, I think from her first husband.
Ex.collection.Patty Miller is a SERIOUS provenance. And thence by descent, through Dennis Boyer, and then the late Robert Kleiner, LTD.

I was great friends with the late Patty in Honolulu, and she used to tell people she was my 'Hawaiian' mother. I never knew I had another 'Hawaiian brother' till after her death, when I met Dennis at an ICSBS convention! I've seen him at a number of conventions, since.

Best,
Joey

Congratulations Samson!

As Joey says, it is very hard to photograph white nephrite bottles. You've done a great job!
And what a provenance....!!!

Dear all,

Thank you very much! I'm glad that my pictures have managed to showcase the charm of the bottle and its impressive carvings! I purposely did it with black background to make the whiteness of the nephrite stand out. In the forth picture, I deliberately moved the light away from the center of the bottle to reduce the exposure in an attempt to give it a museum exhibition feel which I really like.

This bottle just looks different when being captured from various angles. Every shot is kinda unique in some way. I look forward to some new discoveries the next time I'll photograph it! ;)

And it's great to know that it has an ASTOUNDING provenance! :o

It's such a fulfillment for me to have it in my collection!

Best to all,
Samson

Hi Samson,

If you are planning to take any more photos, try the following...

Instead of using black try a mid-grey background. With less contrast the harshness of the white will mellow, and help bring out the variations in shade created by the carved decoration.

Dear Steven,

Do you mean this subject matter?
Because I would date and attribute your 'little begging puppy' Nephrite to the same period and source (ie., ca.1760-1800 and Palace Workshops). So, in a way, you already have "one of this kind" in your collection. ::) ;D

If you mean the subject of flanking archaistic dragons, it is a subject I myself love as well.
I am blessed with 2 in Nephrite, and another in clear overlay over coloured glass, ex.Claudio Gentili collection.

At one time (pre-1993), I had 3 or 4 of this subject in Duan stone (Ink-stone or slate; see #28 in my 1987 catalogue), as well as a couple more in Nephrite. All the Nephrites I know, as well as the two overlay glass examples, one I bought from Claudio of blessed memory via Clare Lawrence LTD, the other in Claudio's own collection, have the same design front and reverse.

Among the Duan stone examples, the [hard to see; sorry] illustrated example has it on one side, but the reverse has 2 'naturalistic' qilong dragons, surrounding a 12 character kaishu inscription.
The other two were like the 'standard' bottles of this type.

You probably won't believe this, but there was a time when fine quality white nephrite plain rectangular flattened flasks on raised footrim, were selling for US$50-100 each. I remember in 1978, YF selling a certain lady collector friend from coastal BC, Canada, a number of 'expensive' overlay glass bottles, and a couple of 'equally expensive' enameled porcelain bottles, at a total price of US$1,300 or so [for 5 bottles!], and throwing in a plain 18th C. Nephrite flask as a gift!

She then asked if she could have another, "as a gift for a friend back in Canada", and received a second! But Mr. Yang has always been very hospitable and very generous to his friends and clients (he always, when referring to "In the early days...", describes those buying from him as 'clients', rather than as 'customers'). Personally, I always felt more like a student and a friend, but 'client' had a nice ring to it as well.

Happy Passover to those who observe it, Happy Easter in a few days to those who observe it,
and Happy Collecting to all!
Best,
Joey

Dear Joey,

Any and all of the above are preferable to being referred to as a 'punter' !!!   ;D  ;)

Tom

Dear Joey,

We have a saying in Chinese called "承你貴言" (Cheng Ni Gui Yan) which sort of means "May it come true as you have wished me"... So, Cheng Ni Gui Yan! ;D

Best,
Samson

P.S. By the way, who are Rodney and Dell Boy? ???

Dear Steven,

May G-D Grant you and all my other friends on the Forum, all the best buys of great snuff bottles!

Del Boy & Rodney are from the hit BBC series, "Only Fools and Horses". They are shady market stall traders in the Cockney area of London, and always trying to trick people and try to get rich quick. Of course, they always lose, because they outsmart themselves.
And Del Boy always talks about 'the punters' (the customers, but in the sense of 'the marks who can be cheated).

   Best,
Joey

Dear Samson,

What a beauty to look at ! 恭喜你 !
What is the size of the jade bottle ?

I also find it quite challenging to photograph white bottles.

Tom,

Thanks for the tip. I must try it as you suggest when I go back to Singapore .
