Title: WHO IS STILL INTERESTED IN VMIPS these days ? Post by: Peter Bentley 彭达理 on February 16, 2017, 09:47:45 am Hi All,
WHO IS STILL INTERESTED IN VMIPS ....these days ? It's gone kind of quiet on the Forum re VMIPBs (= Very Modern Inside Painted Bottles) The "Very" means either post- 1990 or post- 2000 depending on what definition you choose There's a lot of debate on the Forum about this and (if I recall correctly) the consensus was post-2000 as a convenient new "era", thus coinciding with the new millennium. But the majority of Singapore VMIPB collectors would vote for post-1990 (e.g. Wang Guanyu) and I would have to agree with them But ANYWAY .... regardless of whether it's 1990 or 2000 who really cares? : WHO IS INTERESTED TO DISCUSS AND WHO IS STILL COLLECTING VMIPS ? Please remember that this is THE only sub-segment of SB-IPB collecting where one can actually still go to China and MEET the artists ! (That for me is a big thing ... think of collecting modern art paintings and being able to meet Picasso or Jackson Pollack - in person !) Cheers Peter Title: Re: WHO IS STILL INTERESTED IN VMIPS these days ? Post by: wgeoff on February 16, 2017, 08:43:22 pm I haven't posted recently on the Forum because I'm not qualified to comment on non-IP bottles and my own recent IP acquisitions have been 'a bit dodgy' I think. But in response to Peter's request, I will post this one.
I've called it "Scholars in the Snow". I purchased it from Bill Patrick (at a very reasonable price - I believe it's on his website as "Ride in the Snow"), and it's a copy of a bottle by Liu Shouben (including the signature which is an obvious copy). Here it is (https://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geoffwelch46.com%2FSIS01.jpg&hash=56b93b0fe694da6e9118fc679c0897d5) (https://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geoffwelch46.com%2FSIS02.jpg&hash=b663f9d527700ef9469e1f453096f237) (https://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geoffwelch46.com%2FSIS05.jpg&hash=1249df7d4585f3ebe869ed9ccf594f0d) (https://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geoffwelch46.com%2FSIS06.jpg&hash=2702df202f7a51391c8f92486bdb4bc8) Here is the signature and titles, dated 1997 - but who knows as it's a copy. That must be the earliest date, so it fits Peter's description of VMIPs. The bottle itself is darker as shown here, (the glass is artificial brown crystal according to Bill) so I've lightened it above to see the painting better. (https://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geoffwelch46.com%2FSIS03.jpg&hash=d41730352ee937e593384d4a2c56f450) (https://snuffbottle.smfforfree.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geoffwelch46.com%2FSIS04.jpg&hash=af945e1f0aa292dbbc582f60499f74f9) Bill Patrick was told by the owner of this bottle that it was painted by Zheng Xuye ("A New Look" page 133 and 136) who was a student of Liu Shouben and also a friend of the bottle owner. But I'm not sure it's by her, the calligraphy quality doesn't look to be at her standard - I'm interested in any other opinions. But I don't mind, I just like the bottle and the subject which suits my taste, the quality is quite good and it would be much much cheaper than the original Liu Shouben bottle. Actually this is a common subject to copy, other bottles appear in "A New Look" on pages 140 and 164. "A group high civil servants and distinguished personalities rides with its donkeys in the snow in order to enjoy the beautiful snow landscape" Does anyone know where the original painting comes from? One of my favorite artists is Dylan Shu who I hope to commission a bottle with sometime.
Interested very much in VM artist. I did just commission a couple of calligraphy bottles by Tie Ming, and considering to find a VM artist extra skilled at painting dragons in the near future. Currently, it is just to expensive for me to collect both Middle and Very Modern. So yes, am still interested in VMIP these days.. Beautiful bottle Geoff ! That is a very nice bottle, regardless if it is a copy or not. Very well painted, and I like the dark tint. As the calligraphy matching Zheng Xuye, I am not qualified to judge, but as we all know, the quality of signatures can change, as some artist just are not very good at it, and sometimes do a better job than other times. I am still interested in VMIP but I have deviated my attention, focus, and budget almost entirely to MPIP. Anyone interested in some of the non-MPIP bottles I have already posted in my own 'Pat Collection' thread here, please let me know, and make me an offer, if you so desire... As to the VMIP I already own, I am probably going to dispose over time all, except CIPMA artists, landscapes and portraits. Title: Re: WHO IS STILL INTERESTED IN VMIPS these days ? Post by: samsonlzj on February 16, 2017, 11:39:05 pm Dear all,
I had the privilege to see this beautiful IP bottle of Geoff in a recent meeting with him. Gorgeous painting. Like Pat suggested, I actually share the same liking for the dark tint of the bottle. I was telling Geoff since Zheng Xuye herself was quite a renown artist, so why didn't she sign her name on it... But there's a possibility it's actually the work of someone else. In any case, a very beautiful and desirable bottle that really stands out! Best, Samson Title: Re: WHO IS STILL INTERESTED IN VMIPS these days ? Post by: Peter Bentley 彭达理 on February 17, 2017, 01:49:13 am Hi Geoff
I am really puzzled by that lovely Zheng Xuye bottle. Go to Bill Patrick's website and see his entire collection of Zheng Xuye bottles (they are also in my DB) Go to : http://www.snuffbottlecollector.com/zheng_xuye/zheng_xuye_1.htm and then click NEXT It would be worthwhile to ask Bill how and when he acquired those bottles. Seems he bought the entire collection from another collector (a German guy because the bottle descriptions on Bill's website are in English and German ? ) Zheng Xuye is a really early Modern Period artist and so I would be surprised that she was still painting in 1997. However, from the quality of the artwork I would say that whoever painted that bottle is a very skilled and "mature" artist Cheers Peter Title: Re: WHO IS STILL INTERESTED IN VMIPS these days ? Post by: wgeoff on February 17, 2017, 02:59:23 am Yes, you are right Peter.
Bill said he bought a collection "years ago" from a German engineer who lived in Beijing and who knew Zheng Xuye personally and "even had her come to Germany for an exhibition". OK- La ! Then I bet it is a genuine Zheng Xuye, therefore not only beautiful but also rare (and potentially valuable) I assume you have checked out Bill's website for more details. Pity that she did not paint Chinese landscapes.... ! Cheers Peter |
