Please post a view 'face on', of the mouth, and another, also face on, of the base, and please post the height in mm or cm (or in.), and the diameter of the mouth opening. It could be a small vase, or a snuff bottle (for personal use), or a snuff jarlet (to hold larger amounts of snuff, and fill a bottle from), or a medicine bottle/jarlet of a different sort (snuff was considered a medicine by the Qing, so all 'snuff bottles' are by definition 'medicine bottles' for dry powdered medicine [snuff]; there are also such bottles etc., for pills and for tablets etc.). There are 'condition issues' as they would say on the Antiques Roadshow... The height of the bottle is 8 cm and the diameter of the opening 2,3 cm.

I think this is also later in the Guangxu reign, ca.1890-1908, or even later, to first half of the Republican period, 1911-1930. I also think it is a miniature vase or a medicine bottle for holding pills or something other than a powdered material like snuff. Snuff bottles, and medicine bottles for other powdered materials, tend to have a straight mouth, not one curving outward, like this example. Best, HAPPY CHINESE YEAR OF THE FIRE ROOSTER! You could be right, though the enamel colours look right to me for late Guangxu/ Republic. I have not seen large numbers of objects like this, but then, I was not looking, and was not in Hong Kong or PRC from 1996 to 2014. Yes, some of the threads just slipped through. The six men were high-ranking officials in the court and close to the emperor. They were also the policymakers who exploited the common people for their own personal gains. Regards. The name of the character on the bottle is Chen Dong. Just to add, the six corrupt officials were the historical background for the famous Chinese classical novel, The Water Margin aka All Men are Brothers/Outlaws of the Marsh. They were the main cause of the uprising of the peasants who eventually became outlaws at Liang Mountain. For your reference. Regards, Richard |
