Dear Members,

Is this landscape bottle modern? It is about 3 1/4 inches tall.

Thank you,

Brian

Looks like you or someone snagged it so can now share with you that it is Xin Yong Tian, Shandong artist..

Not a well known artist.. I made an offer because even though it is damaged, still a nice MP Shandong example.. And I really like these old medicine bottles turned snuff bottle..

Thanks George. I was able to purchase it. What would you think as far as the age? Bill's site dates this similar bottle to around 1898.

Brian, your bottle is dated Wuchen year, either 1868 or 1928, it's most likely 1928 then... By the way, congratulations on the add!

Best,
Samson

Thank you. I will enjoy it. Does anyone know anything about Xin Yong Tian such as what years he painted or when he was born/died?

All

Hate to burst any bubbles but in my view this is a1988 bottle based on the way it is painted and colors used. It is definitely NOT a middle period bottle but I can be wrong of course. If I am it is 1928 and then the painter could be found in Bob Stevens book, excerpt somewhere here on the forum .

Hi Pat, I think it is possible that the colors are off. I won't know until I see it in person. I was able to find a couple of references to Xin Yong Tian as a Shangdong school artist in the late 19th/early 20th century on some defunct Chinese sites. That information is the same as what as is on Bill's site.

Best,

Brian

Here are my pictures of the bottle. Looks like Shandong school from what I have seen.

Congratulations Brian! This is quite special and it does look Shandong! One question for George. Why do you think this was a medicine bottle? What are the characteristics of a medicine bottle? Hopefully you can answer me when you manage to get online after the internet issue is solved...

Best,
Samson

I am on the internet for a minute !

Congratulations Brian !  Glad it turned out ok for you..

Samson.. These "four panel" type bottles were originally used as medicinal bottles.. The four panels allowed for adhering stickers describing the contents, and or name of doctor.

I do not see any problem dating this the same as Bill has dated his bottle..

Dear Brian,

      I agree with George - ca.late 19th/ early 20th C.
In fact, I have an almost identical landscape, a continuous view in a bottle with four panels, signed Ai Zhen (Sao),
which I have listed in my cataloguing as ca. 1890-1930.
Best,
Joey
