Title: Oval snuff bottle
Post by: Luke on July 14, 2016, 03:47:48 pm
Hi,

This bottle is a flattened oval shape and is 2 1/2 inches high with stopper. I think it could be jade - has a soapy cold feel to the touch and could not scratch when I tried with metal scissors inside the mouth. I don't have any experience of buying or handling jade though.

Anyway opinions on dating? I've always imagined it to be fairly modern...I've seen similar bottles around before. Finally it feels very tactile to hold and is well hollowed...

Hi Pookles..

You are correct about these being around and being modern.. Quite a few similar on eBay regularly.. Can't say for sure if these are a type of true jade or not..  Lets see if anyone else has tested one of these..

Dear Pookles,

It looks like Jadeite to me from the photos.
Best,
Joey

Hi Pookles,

I agree with George and Joey...
This looks like jadeite, and it is also fairly modern.

Regards,
Tom

Dear Luke,

From this bottle's shape to the neck and base all points to modern but I have not seen this type of bottle being well hollowed.

Cheers,
YT

Thanks for all opinions guys. I've always thought this was some kind of jade from my basic tests - was also sold to me as jade. No idea how nice a piece of jade this is though. It really does gleam and stand out from my other bottles.

Dear YT,

Yes the bottle is beautifully hollowed and even throughout unlike my other 2 stone bottles. I have a rhodonite and malachite bottle, which whilst reasonably hollowed are nowhere near as well hollowed as this one. I understand, for instance the value of an old jade bottle is increased when well hollowed because of the craftsmanship involved and the danger of the stone breaking during the process.

here's a couple of photos to try and show the hollowing. Looking inside you can see hundreds of chips from some tool which has been used and is not smooth like the outside.

went and saw some nice old bottles at the weekend from a high-end dealer. Really interesting as had a long chat about various bottle types, aging and values. Didn't buy a bottle though, but some very old porcelain potlets. Snuff bottles were just too expensive...
