Title: Multi-coloured Glass Overlay 'Bogutu'
Post by: YT on June 12, 2016, 02:29:35 am
Dear all,

Seeking opinion on this 7.6cm Multi-coloured Glass Overlay.
Bogutu has been around since Emperor Xuan-He of Song Dynasty in the 12th Century. Flowering Prunus and three ChiLongs found on both sides and base add to the auspicious theme of this bottle.
Dating: 18th to early 19th

Cheers,
YT

Dear all,

Some curiosity that I have no answer to.

1. The three colours swirled together in one of the Bogutu diagram, the brown touch on the red prunus branch?

2. How to gel the story with the three ChiLongs?

Cheers,
YT

Really an exceptionally carved overlay YT.. So crisp and well defined. I dare say one of the very nicest I have seen.  Sorry that I can not help with your questions though..

Sorry YT, my ignorance, but what is Bogutu?

Dear George,

Thank you. This bottle is one of the rare ones where I cannot find much comparison and information.

Dear Samson,

We welcome questions and I have learned much from asking in this amazing platform.
Bogutu-博古圖. Ancient artifacts placed together in paintings during Song Dynasty.
These paintings were found during Ming and became popular in Qing. Thus were copied onto Snuff Bottles.

Cheers,
YT

Aha I see! Now I got it. From its Chinese name, 博古-"abundant range of antiquities", as seen on your snuff bottle! Thanks YT! Very nice one!

YT,

I'm not going to be much assistance either.  A beautiful and well crafted design on a moonstone glass body.  My memory does not recall ever seeing this design or anything similar to date.  Anyway appreciate seeing this one.

Charll

Dear YT,

A stunning bottle, but I must confess I learned a number of things I'd not known before I accessed this thread:
1. 'Bogutu' [Samson, you weren't alone. That's why they say in Ireland, "ask a question, you'll be ignorant for a moment; don't ask, and you'll be ignorant forever" ;D ;)]
2. The term 'Moonstone Glass'. I would have called it simply 'opalescent glass', myself. Evocative name, though.

I will write to Terese Tse Bartholemew, to see if she has any ideas.
Best,
Joey

Dear Joey,

Thank you. This bottle used to belong to Eric Young and later went to the Marcia Howard's collection.

Can I assume the attribution to 18th C. due to the three coloured swirled and the added touch of creating three entirely different Chilongs?

Cheers,
YT
