Title: Does anyone know what type of wood is that?
Post by: marcos on May 06, 2016, 12:00:23 pm
Dear All,

Does anyone know what kind of wood is this? I would guess it is bamboo, but I am not quite sure.

Thanks a lot,

Marcos

Dear George,

Yes, but a burl of which wood?   ;D   ::)
A burl is simply a growth on a tree, caused by a bacterium or a fungus. It produces beautifully grained material,
as is shown in Marcos' bottle.
Best,

Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Dear Macos,

What an interesting bottle!  I had to look several times before 'seeing' the squirrel with a green eye.

I was thinking the fur was the grain showing, but that didn't jive with Burlwood.  The artists had a lot of voids to fill with lacquer putty before coating the entire bottle and that makes identification even more difficult.  It doesn't look like any Chinese wood that I know, so I guess it could have been made just about anywhere in the world. Possibly Japan or SE Asia?

Really is a wonderful bottle . .

The turquoise stones, both on the bottle, and stopper match closely .  I think the stopper original to the bottle..

Dear Tom B.,

I could not figure out what the heck was represented! After you wrote 'squirrel', and posted front and reverse, I can just make out the bushy tail on the reverse, and the animal's ear near the green turquoise insert 'eye'. Wow! You are good!

I had wondered whether it was a type of root-wood. YF Yang had one (#6058) in his little sales catalogue )Y-Cat 2) from his store at 163-C Ocean Terminal, Kowloon, HK, dated October, 1976. The bottle was priced at US$140 and dated Xianfeng (Hsien Feng in W-G).

I had also heard the material called 'Sea-Root', but can't remember where or why.
Best,
Joey

Hi Marcos,

Joey is correct. The term 'burlwood' merely refers to the growth on the tree which causes the deformity. It usually occurs near the base of the tree, and can be confused with the term 'rootwood'.
If your bottle is of Chinese origin, then it is likely to be made from one of a small group of woods which exhibit particularly attractive 'burls'.

The following extract may be of help....

Burlwood (huamu) is a general term for the gnarled or knotty grain usually found near the base or root-head of a tree, and occurs on a wide range of trees. However, only a few varieties have a consistently attractive grain pattern to make them desirable for commercial use. The term 'rootwood' is sometimes used to describe objects fashioned from a single knot.

Varieties of burl most commonly found in Chinese Furniture: -

*huamu burl            Chinese birch burl
*nanmu burl            Chinese cedar burl
*hualimu burl            rosewood burl
*fengmu burl            maple burl
*xiangchang burl            camphor burl

*Maybe one of our Chinese speaking members can provide the Chinese characters for the above named woods.

All best,
Tom L
