Title: Buddha´s hand porcelain bottle
Post by: marcos on March 31, 2016, 04:24:35 pm
Dear All,

I couldn´t find many references to Buddah´s hand citron snuff bottles other than here.

I appreciate if you could share your thoughts on this bottle. It measures 7 cm.

Best Regards,

Marcos

Dear Marcos,

If you can get a copy of Hugh Moss' Chinese Snuff Bottles No.5 magazine, in the Porcelain section (a large article on porcelain snuff bottles which was quite comprehensive in the illustrations), you will see a number of bottles in this form.

Incidentally, the Latin name of the Buddha's Hand Fruit is Citrus Medica. You may know it as the Etrog, one of the Four Species used at Sukkot.
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Dear Marcos,

Attached is a similar fruit(closed fingers) type for your comparison. 19th Century with a metal stopper shaped like a vine.

Cheers,
YT

Hi Marcos,

Yes, Joey is right. Try and get hold of a copy of that book.
Thanks Joey for reminding me where I had seen that article!

Tom

Dear Tom,

For years, that little book was my 'bible' on Porcelain bottles!
Best,
Joey

Dear Joey,

I never figured out etrog was related to citron. That is something new I learnt today.

I will look for the magazine you mentioned.

Shabbat Shalom!

Dear Marcos,

And in Chinese art, you can find the citron, the pomegranate and the peach, called 'the Three Friends'. The first two have a Jewish connection as well, though not the peach.
The format of the magazine is 22cm X  15.5cm X 1cm thick, but No.5 is in hardcover, whereas No.1-3 are in softcover.
(No.6 is also hardcover; last one in series).
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey
