Title: Curious about a Glass "realgar" snuff bottle stopper
Post by: marcos on March 28, 2016, 01:35:06 pm
Dear All,

I am sharing an interesting imitation realgar snuff bottle.

The mottled red and black makes me think of a landscape painting.

I am curious about the silver stopperīs mark. It reads "Qiu Jiu Feng". I couldnīt find any silversmith under this name.

Does anyone know the meaning of this mark?

Warmest Regards,

Marcos

Dear Marcos,

That looks like a very nice Realgar glass bottle, and a very nice silver stopper. I'm sorry, I am not familiar with Chinese silver marks.
Hopefully George, or Steven, or one of the others, can shed more light. I will ask a friend in LA, Bob Lee, if he knows.
His family have Jin Hing Ltd. in LA, but were based in Shanghai and Hong Kong before they emigrated to the USA.
Best,
Joey

Marcos,

Unless the color is off in the photos, this is on the dark end (red-browns vs red-orange or red-yellows) for realgar.  Not to say it isn't an imitation of realgar, but it also lends itself to be an imitation of jasper.  I have two such glass bottles with this coloration mix over a dark red-brown core and an actual stone jasper bottle that matches such a coloration mix.  If the color is correct in the photos, jasper is the first thing that came to my mind.

Regardless, it is a very attractive bottle.

Charll

Charll... Most excellent observation and comparison... Agree 100 % about the jasper..

Hi Joey,

Thanks a lot. If your friend could find the mark, it would help us to date the bottle.

Thanks Charll,

Jasper is more appropriate to the colour patterns.

Dear Marcos,

I see you have been posting quite a number of bottles. Sorry for the late reply due to work commitment. I have a similar bottle and the auction house describes it as 'Imitation of Quartz BloodStone, Glass of flattened ovoid form mottled in dark lavender and black.'

Cheers,
YT

Dear All,

This is an interesting example. Charll is correct that it could equally be described an imitation of Jasper, as of Realgar.
Best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey

Dear All,

I agree that it does look like certain types of jasper, although I find it difficult to see how it is similar to the 'bloodstone' in this example.
